Based off the poster, I thought this was going to be about girls in a break dance crew. Turns out Turkey doesn't have break dancing, just oppression and sexism.
Undeniably amongst the most powerful & provocative narratives to surface on the silver screen in recent years, Mustang is a beautifully balanced blend of skilful direction, sensible writing & terrific performances that takes a much-needed dig at patriarchy & conservatism and also works as a joyful celebration of sisterhood.
Set in a small Turkish village, the story of Mustang follows five young orphaned sisters whose lives are changed completely when they are caught harmlessly playing with some boys on a beach, after which their conservative family bars them from going to school anymore and begins marrying them off one by one without their consent.
Co-written & directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven in what is actually her feature film debut, Mustang takes only a few…
women authentically showing the world the unfortunately very real and grossly overlooked experiences of other women.....THESE are the kinds of films that need to continue being created and widely recognized and awarded.
you know that buzzfeed video where they get drunk girls to hold puppies? one of them sobs and is like "i wish i could protect them." that's me as the drunk girl with the turkish girls as the puppies except im sober and sadder
[jo march's women monologue plays over the speakers] this film to me is what cinema is all about and has just become an instant favourite!!!! it's a perfect example of how important it is for women to have the chance to make movies and tell their own stories!!!!! i'm so glad i finally got round to watching this i'm probably not going to shut up about it for some time now so yeh happy international women's day laid ease go forth and make movies no matter how grand or small because the world truly needs to see them <3
70/100
A.V. Club review. Rare case of a film that I started out hating and wound up kind of loving. Early scenes have the five sisters behaving almost as a single organism, manic and undifferentiated; this proves to have a strategic purpose, as they're subsequently "picked off" one by one by the serial killer known as Patriarchy. Comparison to The Virgin Suicides is unavoidable (though I confess that it didn't occur to me until I read other reviews; saw Coppola's film only once, when it opened, and really need to revisit it), but Ergüven's take on the subject is at once less artful and more emotionally direct. For whatever reason, the tradeoff works for me here much more often than…
There's so much to talk about in Mustang, a film that centers on the adolescence of five girls from Turkey whose childhoods are simultaneously taken away from them while kept behind lock and key, but of particular note is the caring relationship of sisterhood and how much older figures act as shields for the younger.
As they grow older and find their freedoms more and more restricted, they must contend with tradition fully taking away their agency as women. None of them really knows what that means, at least not at first, but soon the oldest sisters begin to understand it fully and pass that along to the younger ones. Marriage, arranged and loveless, is a fate for them, and…
One of the best movies I’ve ever seen,, very much like Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides.
Scavenger Hunt #70 || Twenty-Seven || An Iranian or Turkish film
I saw a lot of people comparing this to The Virgin Suicides which I don’t think is a wrong comparison to make but this gave me something that Coppola did not. It gave the girls a voice.
I wish I had sisters. I’d hug them tight.
Women deserve the whole world and societies that would rob them of their freedom, their choice, their everything deserve to be torn down.
Yasin is a real one.
Mustang is a Turkish movie about five sisters who are living with their uncle and grandmother after losing their parents. The oppressive culture leads to their house gradually becoming a prison for them.
It's gotten some lukewarm reviews but it's not easy to see why. It's very well directed and the whole cast does a good job. Of course it's not representative of a culture as a whole, but the scenario certainly seems plausible. A great score tops up a movie that could easily pass as Hollywood indie drama, but is now nominated for Best Foreign Feature. This is already something I could see win the trophy.
Shout out to Brandon for the recommendation!
The movie does such a great job balancing the stressful expectations the characters deal with while also showing them find ways of trying to escape. Finding a place to be free and express themselves without being judged by people and their silly gender norms. I find it intentional that the girls look so similar to each other (outside of the fact they are sister). It is a way to convey how those around them view them all the same. Which means that they expect them to behave the same. Rebellious actions rooted in a desire to truly be seen and accepted by those that love them. Rather than having to recreate themselves into someone that the world around them wants to see. I am going to be thinking about this movie for awhile.
we need more movies like this. we need more stories for girls by girls. girlhood is so transcendental, so achingly beautiful, so goddamn tragic. this fucking gutted me
An invoking perspective of the daunting realism that is Middle Eastern Patriarchy; but instills faith on empowering women and their independence through a familial lens. Beautifully shot, although it has minimal dialogue the actions spoke louder than words.
