One of my favorite spoof films. WAY too underrated. Great cast (which includes one of my favorite cameos by a particular action star) and even some clever and hilarious jokes and sight gags. I'd put this up there with the likes of Airplane, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Naked Gun.

Zucker/Abrahams style spoof with laughs that land somewhere in-between the Naked Gun sequels. Whenever not hitting as particularly funny, it's fun to marvel at all the recognizable character actors, comedians, and media personalities popular at the time on hand. Some of the humor is dated but its nowhere as bad as Scary Movie (2000) and its derivatives killing this kind of comedy's popularity by going overboard with that aspect.
It still manages to lampoon Lethal Weapon well despite shooting off in a slew of tangents and has weird crosstalk with Last Action Hero from the same year with F. Murray Abraham and Frank McRae (as another shouty, hot-headed police captain). Speaking of the Naked Guns, Loaded Weapon also has globs of scenes exclusive to its TV version currently locked away in some forgotten film vault. All of these are screaming out for special edition Blu-ray treatment. Watched via New Line's DVD.

Loaded Weapon 1 does lack that vintage Zucker bros magic that made Airplane! and the first Naked Gun truly memorable and instead, it approaches things in a pedestrian manner. The so-called 5 min laughs and jokes seem muted and short and a tad giggle-worthy, but aren't exactly laugh-out-loud funny, as they lack the rapid-fire approach where the jokes do not hit the funny bone as hard as it could have done, and the consistency in good comedy that is being churned out is not as good as I'd imagined it to be.

Released in 1993 when audiences still had hope for John McClane, Riggs and Murtaugh and the whole Action'y Cop genre Loaded Weapon 1 wasn't looked on favourably. Wind the clock forward 18 years and this National Lampoon movie is right up there with any of the ZAZ films (Naked Gun, Airplane, Kentucky Fried Movie) in terms of irreverent silliness.
There's a very clear appreciation for the genre it's sending up in much the same way Not Another Teen Movie handled the length and breadth of the genre from John Hughes to American Pie, so too Loaded Weapon 1 beats down the door of Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Dirty Harry, Rambo, 48 Hours while poking…

I saw this when it came out and always thought it was pretty lame, and it is, but there's also some pretty good jokes hidden in here. Unsurprisingly it's Lovitz who gets the best lines, or maybe he just has a natural knack for selling em:

I've referenced this several times a week for decades.
When you nail this kind of thing, it's the highest of high art to me.
I'm sure the references are mostly outdated now, but there are probably 200 jokes in this movie, and most of them are perfect and amazingly stupid.
How Gene Quintano didn't become a legendary comedy director is beyond me. He is in my book.

I miss this style of irreverent humor, and the timing of seeing Basic Instinct only a month ago for it to be one of the biggest movie spoofs here worked out perfectly. It's perhaps not as inventive as The Naked Gun, but it's every bit as fun.
It's notable how this movie has had practically no shelf life, but most of the movies it spoofs remain rewatched today.

I understand that these movies spoof genre stuff, but I wasn't prepared for a joke that just assumes I've seen other spoof movie Hot Shots (I haven't).
Pretty funny! I feel like the gay joke was actually very ahead of its time. It was just "I have been in romantic bliss with many men" which feels like it could be from a 2000s Will Ferrell film.

The opening convenience store shootout, an insane display of wacky carnage and sight gags, immediately sets the tone for this broad, over-the-top, cartoonish action comedy.
The plot really isn't too important here, but the writers do their best to develop something fun and weird. A plot to sell cocaine cookies through the Wilderness Girls cookie sale definitely fits the bill. The plot takes some really ridiculous turns, but it's simply a way to drive us from one movie reference to the next and certainly wasn't jarring.
