a science fiction movie about a world in which cops are prosecuted for police brutality
This is....not a good movie.
It's by Dennis Dugan, who crafted Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill after all--I didn't realize that when I started watching, and I didn't realize that the plot contrivance that puts Steve Zahn's former-cop in the same life lane as Martin Lawrence's wanna-be security guard (think Seth Rogen and Ray Liotta's chemistry in Observe and Report, only more gunfire and they're supposed to be sympathetic, I suppose) is when Zahn attempts to arrest Lawrence and gets arrested for assaulting him after a bystander mistakenly captures him on camera trying to hit a bee with his nightstick (?@!??!) as Lawrence is terribly allergic to bees, and his swollen features after getting stung are blamed on the beating…
"Hi, I'm Martin Lawrence. In case you didn't notice, I'm black. I AM A BLACK PERSON!!! What, you still don't understand that? Well, seems like I will have to remind you that I AM A BLACK PERSON for the next 88 minutes, reminding everyone that police are racist against black people!"
I wanted to kill myself while watching this. Had it been an action comedy with Steve Zahn and any other black comedian (think early Eddie Murphy), this would have been barely passable: some of the early action is nice, and there are plenty of explosions and practical effects. Instead, Lawrence's presence makes this an unwatchable film, with the same jokes repeated over and over again. Most of the cast…
Do people like actually find Martin Lawrence funny?
Really?
What the fuck is wrong with you people.
Thought I'd stick this on seeing as though it's Buddy Cop Week on Letterboxd, when it's fucking working, that is. And if it wasn't for Martin Lawrence, this would probably have been ok, especially for a Dennis Dugan film.
But no, there he is, confirming his candidacy for the most annoying twat in the history of civilisation by mugging his stupid arse way through the entire fucking movie. I don't know how everyone else on this film could tolerate him tbh. I genuinely think all those dirty looks that Steve Zahn gave him in this were real dirty looks rather than acting ones and I think he would have been well within his rights to have stuck one on him.…
Remember when Martin Lawrence used to be funny?
You don't?
Maybe it's just me...
What the problem is?
my cousins put this on last night and i left twenty mins in but from what i saw, yikes
Had to check to see if this was listed under the genre "Fantasy" because the cop got fired AND went to jail for six months after beating up an unarmed black man.
I have nothing to say other than that the special effects and cg absolutely KILLED ME
A truly groundbreaking film. One that breaks the rules of mathematics. We have always thaught that double negative makes a positive. Now when Martin Lawrence and Steve Zahn meet, we find out that it's still just doule negative. Whatever good there probably is in the action and even parts of the script, is drowned under the general irritatiness of the main duo. Usually even one of them is enough to ruin a comedy. Together they are unstoppable.
Or maybe I'm wrong, since I was so appalled by the duo that I couldn't watch more than five minutes before I had to switch the channel to avoid throwing up. Maybe the rest of it's golden and this is one of the funniest movies ever. If so, let me know and I'll watch all of it.
Then again that would require you to actually watch the movie and I really wouldn't recommend it.
Politicized police brutality is a staple in Martin Lawrence action movies. Bill Duke is a staple in entertaining crime b movies. It's weird seeing Steve Zahn as a straightforward cop but 2003 was a different time and he was a talented actor. I think Martin Lawrence skills came across better in movies while someone like Will Smith or even Damon Wayans (while better actors) shine more in a tv or sitcom environment. And i think that mightve been tity boi on the credit song.
Yet another cop film. I've found myself slightly able to watch through it with some smirks here and there, but it is just another brick in a wall in the oversaturated genre.
45/100
Yikes. This has not aged well at all.
I like Martin Lawrence and I like Steve Zahn, but this movie doesn't seem like it let's either of them do what they do best.
