Another film I wanted to see for years. ByNWR restored this one and it's currently on Mubi.
Restoration looks great. It's great to see Dennis Hopper's boyish looks and Santa Monica/Venice circa 1960.
mix together kenneth anger, psychosexual horror, 50s beach movies and a little film noir and this is what you get
"i love the sea most of all... but i'm afraid of it too."
"i guess we're all a little afraid of what we love."

Day 30. A movie directed by Curtis Harrington.
This last year I have grown to respect and fear mermaids.
Dennis Hopper is a sailor on shore leave in a hip and happening town. He tries to hook up with Mora, a mermaid girl from the carnival and well... it's a horror movie and she's got a troubled past. This movie looks amazing and is the sort of film I think of when my students tell me that all black and white is bad... and then I cry. The use of shadow and contrast here is masterful, it is a fucking classy lookin' piece of film I'll…
Fish Noir
Fascinating to see how Anger’s influence seeps into an otherwise nondescript Corman cheapie — not just in the references to the occult, but in Dennis Hopper’s Fireworks-esque hunky sailor and the presence of Marjorie Cameron. A little long, but with atmosphere and repressed sexuality for days.
Wow, Dennis Hopper was a strapping young lad in his younger years, wasn’t he. This was such a trippy little film. I liked it. The black and white cinematography definitely added to its eeriness, although I think it could have pushed the horror elements a little further. 3 out of 5 slimy tentacles for now.
Big shocker that the AIP cheapie Venice Beach carny-noir horror movie made by Anger associates and starring Dennis Hopper rules, I could never have guessed. Why the hell did I wait so long to see this?
Daily Horror Haunt, Day 20!
"Spooky old mermaid movie starring Dennis Hopper" sounded like exactly my kind of weird and yes, yes it was! I actually loved this movie and it's one I'll come back to when I want those Carnival of Souls type feels.
This thing is Moody with a capital M in like every scene and I'm so here for it. This is a gorgeous film, the kind that's worth watching just for the moody (sorry, I'm gonna be saying that a lot) shots of the beach and pier at night. I live for scenes of vintage L.A., and this offers a beautiful snapshot of early 60s Santa Monica and Venice. The aesthetic is paired with a very…

Night Tide....1961
Director....Curtis Harrington
"The tide pulls my heart."
Night Tide is a black and white indie psycho sexual horror flick from the sixties, that is almost a work of art.
A young naive sailor (Dennis Hopper) meets an alluring woman (Linda Lawson) who could possibly be a mermaid. Luana Anders, is the "good" girl who cares for Hopper, and Gavin Muir is a bizzare sea captain.
I've never liked mermaids, there is something fishy about them, and Night Tide proves my point.
I really got a Carnival of Souls vibe off of this. I really dug the seaside boardwalk setting, reminiscent of Incredibly Strange Creatures.
This flick is incredibly deep with layers of subtext, the most prominent being…
“i feel the seawater in my veins, because i listen to the roar of the sea and it speaks to me like a mother’s voice. the tide pulls at my heart, the face of the moon fills my soul with a strange longing”
so beautiful. the atmosphere is absolutely amazing. there are a couple of things i didn’t like and some things i could nitpick, but those things pretty much ceased to matter by the time i was really swept up in the atmosphere. as if the film was just taking me along like i was floating in the sea, just letting myself be carried along by the water, deeper and deeper into the sea, away from worries and the…
The worst movie I've watched in years i threw away the blu Ray need the space.
The restoration done by Nicolas Winding Refn is BEAUTIFUL. The movie would be beautiful anyway for many reasons, not least of which is it serving almost solely as a showcase for young babyface Dennis Hopper. Just so comforting to look at the whole way through.
beautifully uncanny cinematography and atmosphere. the hyper-realistic setting interwoven with dream sequences is outstanding. i wish the actors had more chemistry and maybe went as far as delivering their lines well, but what are you gonna do.
2 stars because i love mermaids and the aquatic realm (HIGHLY biased in my part)
1 star for the cinematography
1/2 star deducted for acting and some of the writing 😩
This might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it's definitely my cup of tea - moody, dreamy, haunting, poetic, surreal.
It evokes Val Lewton while also pointing toward "does this person have mysterious powers or not" films of the future like George Romero's "Martin" and "Season of the Witch."
The restoration, on MUBI, is ravishing.
Soo Atmospheric, intense slow placed surreal horror..better version of the shape of water!
A solid entry into the mermaid genre of films. Dennis Hopper and Linda Lawson were really great in it. I love the use of dreams and blending the mystical elements with the grounded setting of the pier and amusement park. It has a wonderful atmosphere to it and reminds me a lot of Cat People.
Until this moment I had no idea I couldn't live without the image of Dennis Hopper getting it on with an Octopus,
