1984 ‘Pas de repos pour Billy Brakko’ Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
An early short film from Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro.
Fun little footage assembly piece with enough narrative elements to keep it interesting.
Cute- hard to find though, and the copies available digitally seem to be badly damaged.
Noneless, it's a wonderful short snapshot of Jeunet's early days, and you see some of this influence in Micmacs, which makes this a joy if you pair it thusly...
The use of shadow in this film is extremely inspired, while I don't enjoy it at all points I found it added to the tension exponentially. The design of the puppets also added to this, very surreal and made it a very strange experience, for sure.
I didn't understand a thing that was going on, however. I think it could've been more obvious, and I do not know if I'm just dumb; I understood 'Street of Crocodiles' just fine, it was just very hard to shadow, as mentioned, partly due to the hyperbolised use of shadow.
Interesting, for sure.
I watched this without subtitles and I don't speak French.
Still good for Jeunet's distinctive visuals.
