Margaret qualley really had me wanting a church girl who goes to church and reads her bible
if sony pictures classics didn’t splash their entire awards campaign budget on call me by your name, melissa leo would’ve gotten the recognition she deserves
something about examinations of sexuality and faith within catholicism always gets me to the BONES
the lesbians weren't exaggerating about how good the "please, comfort me" scene. hoooooo i felt god alright
I don’t think it was a sin, because it didn’t feel like a sin, it felt like how I’m supposed to feel.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"please please please please please please please" - an actual real life quote from this movie, and also me begging for death after i finished it
if Melissa Leo stopped being in movies that would be fine by me.
(this is rude. i'm sorry. but i speak from the heart)
"You can leave anytime you want."
"And do what?"
A beautiful, emotionally complex look at the intersections of personal identity, faith, and the need for intimacy. How do we feel the difference between wanting a connection with the Lord and already having one? Is believing in that connection the same thing as having it? How can you ever really know? There's a sense of relief that comes from routine, the stricter the rules, the more securely anxiety is held at bay. But when those rules become too tight, and the mind wanders still, that anxiety manifests in a more insidious way. Religion can be as wonderful as it can be consuming.
I could talk about this one for ages, but I'd rather get into a more direct dialogue, as that's what this film is -- a presentation of questions with only hints of answers. I can't wait for more of y'all to see this. You absolutely should.
Rating: 88/100
the way she says “please please please comfort me” like 100 times left literally shaking
A story of two stories really, the first relating to the changing landscape of the church in the wake of Vatican II, and the second following one young nun in training. I think it works quite well pulling the two together, and shows the generational divide between the old guard of nuns who have followed the same old ways for centuries, and the younger girls coming through who have a million doubts and reservations, even those who are the most faithful.
There is a brooding cloud of repression hanging over the whole film. The way the girls are drained of every inch of their humanity in the name of what? Penance? "I dont think it was a sin. Because it didnt feel like a sin. It felt like Im supposed to feel." Jesus, when that repression breaks, its like an explosion of relief.
and i don’t think it was a sin, i don’t think it was a sin because it didn’t feel like a sin, it felt like I’m supposed to feel.
i got u girl, i got u
