cant believe they faked the moon landing just so we wouldn't see the pop girl living in there
Animated films hit the hardest when it tackles grief and loneliness, and this one is no different. Over the Moon is an animated musical film that tells the story of a girl named Fei Fei, who used her wits and passion to build a rocket ship, in order to meet the moon goddess, Chang’e. Losing a loved one is a concept that everyone struggles or will struggle at some point and losing that loved one at such a young age can tremendously impact one’s future.
The topics of grief and reluctance to change are concepts that are nothing new, especially to animated films, as films like Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015) embed themselves to our minds, by showing the…
Over the moon has a heartwarming story that can be so comforting when you’re feeling lost, it deals with grief and loneliness is such a personal way. what stood out to me was how impactful this movie will be for young chinese kids watching it. it depicted chinese culture and chinese people so beautifully. this film would’ve made my world when i was a young chinese girl growing up in america, i got emotional watching it thinking of how many young chinese kids watching it see their culture as something so meaningful and beautiful and not something weird or odd. love the casting choices for the voices of each character and the songs were modern musical/pop-edm which i think matched the overall essence of the film very well. my new go to comfort movie. (this is super biased as well lol)
When did American kids movies become so preoccupied with death? When did being a beloved relative in a colorful animated children’s adventure become as much of a death sentence as being a teenager in a “Final Destination” film? Loss and the lessons that come with it are somewhat foundational to a genre that’s still associated with the likes of “Bambi” and — more recently — “The Lion King,” but over the last few years it’s started to feel as if feature-length cartoons have embraced their function as surrogate grieving counselors for young people who need a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.
This is not a complaint: As someone raised on the grief-adjacent “My Neighbor Totoro” (and…
As a kid I always dreamt of being an astronaut and climbing my own rocket till my dad crushed my dreams. So this hits too close home for me to love💀
Call me miss petty. Thanks dad🖕🏻
Everything was fine and I enjoyed this quite a bit until this annoying green blob appeared and ruined everything...
this has so much heart and was so stunningly animated!!!!! give it the disney level hype that it deserves please!!!
The main reason I watched the film was ultimately because of Phillipa Soo and Sandra Oh (whose songs and screen time did not disappoint)…and my four-year-old niece who forced me to watch it with her. It turns out that it isn’t half as bad as the trailer makes it out to be.
I love how beautiful animation films are turning out this century, and how they explore themes in such a way that children are able to understand and appreciate. Over the Moon's animation is superb and visually stunning. There is no disappointment there at all, yet I feel like the many extra characters added during the second half (such as the biker chicks) were so random and only…
This is the type of film where, for me, the songs get in the way. And there are an enormous amount of them in here.
Over the Moon has a big heart and that's where its strength lies. It's a tender, at points heartwarming, story that takes a while to get going, but when it does there is a lot to like.
I was especially pleasantly surprised by the quality of the animations, particularly in the sequences on the moon. They are really vibrant and off-beat enough for this film to be its own thing.
For the better part that is, because it leans (perhaps too) heavily on the formula these films apparently need to follow. You know you're in…
2020 Releases Ranked-HERE
Well, Over the Moon was a nice little surprise. This American-Chinese computer-animated musical/adventure film directed by Glen Keane and stars the voice talents of Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, and Sandra Oh.
You’d think that by October an animated film would have come out to rival Pixar’s crown. Yet, from what I’ve seen very few have come close this year. Could Over the Moon be that film to rival this years Onward? Well to begin with, It’s undeniable that the colourful animation mixed with the occasional brilliant song is what makes it as good as it is, but the true highlight of the film is the brilliant score by…
My most anticipated film of the month, Netflix finally released over the moon to the public and while I can safely say it's not any sort of masterpiece, I pretty much loved every moment. The film feels truest in its moments of character with the naive young girl grieving - and subsequently searching - for her mother, and is strongest in its early moments of family life and everyday youthful innocence. Even when it treads ground far less than what one could conscionably call "original," it achieves it with such visual flair and straightforwardness that it's always a treat for the senses if not the mind.
The inconsistency of the soundtrack - a 'How Far I'll Go' style anthem followed…
I know, I know... I’m a little late. Over the Moon is a beautifully cultural, impressively animated and cute little movie that feels aimed at a much younger demographic. Sometimes the way the dialogue or characters were presented felt a little too childlike and immature for me but the message that the film is trying to send is lovely. While the lighting and locations looked amazingly impressive, pretty, cartoony and realistic, the character design, specifically that of the faces, looked fairly bland. I don’t know if it was just me but something about the way the people look seemed kind of boring. I definitely thought it was creative to make this film a musical, because it definitely pushes the plot in interesting ways. Even though I’ll probably forget the songs, they were enjoyable to hear and see. I think it’s a sweet and heartfelt movie that has great intentions that isn’t for me, it feels more kid-oriented rather than family-oriented.
"... O longa-metragem é um bonito conto sobre a aceitação da morte, de uma forma que apenas as manifestações culturais chinesas e norte-americanas conseguiriam mediar. Ao se vincular afetivamente a uma deusa que optou pela imortalidade e está há milhares de anos esperando o amor da sua vida, Fei Fei projeta uma realidade paralela, onde a morte de sua mãe não foi o fim de tudo ..."
The start was properly enchanting, but for me it lost its way a little towards the middle- don’t get me wrong I loved the switch up of song genres, but the plot felt more rushed and the humour and plot points became less subtle and more on the nose.
Beautifully animated though and a lovely sentiment none the less!
Beautiful animation and songs
I wish the moon creatures were designed differently
It's a good movie and the animation takes it to another level
In terms of story the film is a bit weaker on this front, it slightly felt like certain things just kinda happened and didn't feel like they did much, but the message it tries to tell the audience to me is the strongest story element about plus outside of those few parts the story's pretty good.
-
On the animation front I don't think it's a lie to say this is some of 2020's strongest animation, the creativity, vibrancy and the overall designs are just amazing, honestly the animation truly is the best highlight of the film!
-
And finally in terms of characters I actually like most of them if there is one fault I have with them it's somewhat the tone of Fei Fei for a good portion, she just feels a bit too melancholy and bitter for my taste otherwise like the story they're very solid!
This movie would have been a lot better if it wasn’t a musical.
or at least if it was a musical with good music.
or at least if the music was traditional Chinese music and not just modern pop.
Can’t believe this children’s film handled the theme of grief and loss better than Wandavision.
Very creative and colourful. All over the place though. Many (often beautiful) ideas were all thrown into one pot and mushed together, so there's not a well-thought-out through line, and you can only glint at some little snippets of brilliance peaking out through all the chaos.
Over the moon consegue ser bonito, encantador, sensível e batente simbolista.
mm i dont know, the acoustics are kinda bad when you're singing on top of a frog
oh man you introduce to me a frog character and i am IN from the get go, then you spoil me with a FIELD OF GIANT GLOWING TOADS 🤩
i somehow kept forgetting that this was a musical and was pleasantly surprised every time. the mix of 3D with 2D motifs and snippets of longer animated sections is a lovely collaboration and the art direction of the psychedelic world? magnificent. the expression animation is soooo good watching Chang'e chatter
