I had never heard of this film. I decided to rent it via iTunes because I was curious to see what Thora Birch has been up to. She and her father are two of "Petunia"'s producers. Birch has a crucial role in the story, but her character is more in the background and serves as a catalyst. I suspect that Thora Birch is probably the most talented actor involved.
Luck in Planet Hollywood Logic has not worked in her favor for over a decade. After delivering two amazing performances in "American Beauty" and even more so in "Ghost World" she seems to have been pushed into the world of B-grade movies. I am continually perplexed by the fact that Scarlett…

There is no heart in Petunia, only shallow grabs for attention amidst a formulaic dramedy of familial dysfunction. Petunia concerns the lives and loves of the Petunia family, headed by Percy and Felicia Petunia (David Rasche and Christine Lahti, respectively), parents to three 20-something sons. Their youngest, Charlie (Tobias Segal), is the ostensible center of the crew, though his only purpose is to gape and panic as everyone around him does astonishing things that will be far less astonishing to you than they are to him.
The Petunias and their various lovers are all quirky and neurotic in a way you’ve seen before, probably last night on your favorite TV show, which is where Petunia steals many of its jokes…

Dysfunctional family dramedy never settles on a tone or a protagonist. Mom’s divorcing, daughter (Thora Birch) is having an affair and the youngest son is courting a shady neighbor (Michael Urie). The actors oversell the lazy jokes. Nothing quite works.

Once upon a time, I watched a movie called Penelope - the one where Christina Ricci has the nose of a pig - thinking it was this one, wondering the whole time when Thora was going to show up... she did not, because it was a different movie. But that one was way better.

It was alright? I think? I don't know? I just have an internal monologue of "ehhhhhh" running through my head at the thought of this movie.
The family is fucked up. Surely. And you do struggle to find characters to empathize with but, they're there, in the last half of the film. It wasn't exactly a strong plot, but it did weirdly come together in the end.
