I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express how important Alma is to me.
There have been many characters that have almost been her, but none of them have ever come close. She embodies everything I am, everything I’ve tried to be, and everything I’ve ever wanted to be. I’ve thought myself to be Alma before, but I’ve never been brave enough. She’s weak, but is stronger than anyone she’s around. She’s kind, but could break every bone in every body with her words. And yet, she’s in love.
She does something I’ve never been able to do. She does what I’ve always dreamed of doing and have constantly beat myself up for not being able to. Alma is…
What an accomplishment. One of my faves of the year.
Please see this projected on film. It's worth it.
PTA's cinematography should have received way more recognition this award's season.
After Phantom Thread ended, two older women walk out of the theater, laugh, and say, “You do what you have to do to make your relationship work. It was perfect.”
In other words, it’ll be hard for any film this year to beat this. Paul Thomas Anderson is in love with filmmaking and its so obvious in the way Phantom Thread is presented. Hilarious, tantalizing, enchanting, and beautiful. Vicky Krieps steals the show.
absolutely unmatched lighting, absolutely unmatched score. jonny greenwood the motherfucking king. cannot believe how delicate and pleasant this movie feels for what it is. it’s like the great british bake off but for assholes. i love it. i’m also so lonely right now that at the asparagus dinner fight i found myself thinking “god i would kill to be in a weird and bitter fight with a girlfriend right now” which is healthy!
phantom thread posits an impressively fresh take on the older, eccentric male genius with a younger female muse trope, but that’s to be expected from THE paul thomas anderson.
it’s a slow-burning fuse with a quietly explosive ending sequence. it’s the kinkiest film to not actually feature any sex scenes. it’s fifty shades of grey for the arthouse crowd... in a good way.
one of the purest joys in this world is insisting that a bunch of new friends who’ve never seen this watch it and then observing them go from shocked realization —> pensive contemplation —> hesitant acceptance —> effusive approval —> fist-pumping euphoria during the climactic omelette scene. this was my 4th time doing this and it never gets old! in fact, it’s the only foreseeable reason to keep making new friends!!!
I shit you not I was so shook by this movie I stood on the other platform at the station and am currently on the wrong train home
Last time I saw this was in theaters and the screen had a brown splotch in the center of it. Took me about twenty minutes to realize it wasn't a choice by PTA.
rewatching PHANTOM THREAD, loving that it is a movie about how queer men are obsessed with memories and archetypes and the idea of bodies but can’t deal when that body, like, is alive and speaks up for itself
i was falling in love until daniel started talking like jordan peterson.
“you are not cursed, you are loved by me.”
i don't think i can put into words how fucking beautiful this movie was. it's so fucking shocking, i'm literally speechless. 'phantom thread' was so perfect, writing a review about it seems disrespectful, reductive, unnecesary. alma is oficially the best character in the history of cinema.
"i want you flat on your back. helpless, tender, open. with only me to help."
It's hard to fully explain in words why I love this movie so much but there it is. There is so much great in this film: the acting! the costumes! the set design! the cinematography! But really my favorite part is the Jonny Greenwood score. He did something so beautiful and right out of old movie, but better! It's different from his other scores but still feels like him.
I still don't quite understand the Munchausen by proxy element but there's a lot there to think about.
paul my baby, you had me right up until the end. i was all like "yeah i get this" and this is imagery that is smart enough that seems well thought-out but dumb enough that i could understand it and feel good about myself. "whoa he's saying that he can make a dress that can give her boobs but only if he feels like it. that's like symbolism for having control over her womanhood. i'm crushing this movie"
i get that the ending's a metaphor for the ultimate toxic relationship that is impossible to understand aside from the two participants. fine. but getting their amorous rocks off by poisoning/being poisoned by the other wades from the territory of subtlety to…
PTA & DDL - making me care about British dress designers since 2017
Soundtrack is fucking awesome
Got a bit more of PTA's subtle directing and setup, for characters and their motives/actions within the story.
A+
Paul Thomas Anderson’s infatuation for filmmaking is on full display. One of my favorites. Absolutely gorgeous. Fresh take for a story about a romance. This is genuinely funny, and as a person with a heavy interest into fashion, this makes it even more great. “CHIC?!... what is that word? Fucking Chic!”
Anotha one
Ghosts, curses, hexes, poison, dresses, illness, control, death, vulnerability & love. It's the fairytale for our times.
