sometimes it's just nice to watch a studio movie that was actually storyboarded
A lot of people hate this film and claim it was where the franchise truly met its downfall.
I love this just as much as the first film.
Sue me.
Jack: "Is this a dream?"
Bootstrap: "No."

MY GAWD.
It’s insane that this movie is not featured on every list of the best sequels out there. From minute one, it takes the pre-established lore and characters from the first film and adds depth, satisfying growth, and better stakes all the way. Also, like any good Empire Strikes Back analogy, it veers darker than everything before. There’s just something so entirely lacking in bathos here that embraces the epic and the absurd without letting either one eclipse the other. And the imagery is so strong, so striking, so much fun!
It’s additionally insane that this is, without a doubt, one of the best-looking blockbusters of the 2000s - and certainly better-looking than almost anything out today. How did…
one of the best villains ever honestly? he is a SQUID MAN... who plays an organ with his FACE TENTACLES...... that’s amazing and objectively great. he has a crew!! of other half man half sea creature hybrids!! HIS HEART IS LOCKED IN A CHEST. he is vulnerable and tragic and he was just doing his job!!
sorry but this movie is more than just fun, it’s great storytelling and I love it.
94/100
The Empire Strikes Back of my generation as far as I'm concerned.
Film critics like to call this convoluted. A criticism also often directed at its follow-up, At World's End, and apparently one that Dead Men Tell No Tales has not been able to escape. Honestly, what does "convoluted" even means anymore? Heeey what's this? A movie that the screenwriters actually bothered to THINK to come up with its story? Nah, that's too much for the general audience. It's boring and hard to follow.
I watched this movie when I was 11, I was completely enthralled by it and easily understood its story. How the FUCK is this hard to follow?! If an 11 year old can understand this,…
After 14 years of nothing but animation and CGI infested films, Davy Jones is still one of the best CG characters out there...
"I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."
Narratively some kind of cumbersome riddle, but so packed with non-sequitur incident and broad humor that it almost resembles INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. Pretty much one damn thing after another. Kind of a watershed for modern CGI, with a lot of really seamless integration of performance capture, pure animation, and elaborate practical sets. Davy Jones smoking a pipe in the rain or, in probably my favorite moment of the film, Sparrow charging into the Kraken's mouth, are as purely iconic images as this stuff ever managed. Bill Nighy is terrific in this and Orlando Bloom is thankfully not in it all that much.
Its predecessor is the more structurally perfect film; there are narrative longueurs and clashing elements here that still come off as convoluted and unnecessary nearly 15 years later. But this will always be my personal favorite as Gore Verbinski's mad playhouse vision projected at its most colossal yet visually lucid, the work of the finest blockbuster filmmaker of his generation indulging every whim with the Big Mouse's cash. If the narrative is flabbier this time, the filmmaking may be even tighter; watch how this thing leaps out of the gate with its simultaneous raising of narrative stakes and how quickly it sets its grotesque tone.
Not since the early, expressionist days of Disney's animated features has a major company property…
The follow-up chapter to The Curse of the Black Pearl might appear inferior in content & a step-down in quality of narration but it nonetheless succeeds as a worthy sequel that presents significant upgrades in many aspects, takes the spectacle of the first film to a higher level and despite a few hiccups remains a highly entertaining & amusing ride for the most part.
The second instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Dead Man's Chest continues the journey of the savvy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow as he's reminded of the debt he owes to Davy Jones, Captain of the Flying Dutchman, and then races against time to steal Jones' heart in order to strike a bargain with him. But he…
Gore Verbinski just looked at the first film and went like, “Yeah, that was great, but I think I can out do myself with the sequel “ and Disney was cool with it.
Talking about a sequel that delivers on what made the original so great and truly expand upon it while also upping everything to like 10 million in terms of more gothic horror influences, an terrifying villain, more character dynamics, amazing action set pieces (like that whole beach scene towards the end, cinema!), and taking the adventure genre to a whole another level. Im excited to see where things conclude with the 3rd installment.
Also this film said Elizabeth Swann rights and I’m here for it.
I thought pirates were not of my interest but right now all I want to do is wear pirates cloths, an eye patch, buy my own ship and dig a hole in some caribbean beach. But all of this is mainly because of the fist one, this one was not as good (as usual in most of the sagas), but still worth it.

First time watching a Pirates of the Carribbean film in full and wasn't that impressed.
There was absolutely no good reason for this to be 2 and a half hours long. Especially since its main purpose is just to set up the next one.
+ 1/2 star for Bill Nighy and Davy Jone's groundbreaking CGI
Spoils everything that was watchable about the first one by encouraging Depp to dial up the intensity of the Keith Richards impression, give more screen time to the awful romance between Knightly and Bloom and extend the run time to three hours.
-You were actually telling the truth!
-I do that quite a lot...yet people are always surprised.
Ps: the Greek-Cypriot dude, forever iconic.
Damn, I did not expect to like it as much as I did. Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is great, Johnny Depp is funny, the action is clearly taken up to absurd proportions.
Fuck it, 4.5 stars. Good job, Gore Verbinski. Good job.
a perfect sequel, ignoring the slight character design changes (hair/outfits/makeup) what was that about
I mistakenly watched this before the first one so it's no wonder I couldn't get into it. They're not my sorts of films anyway but I feel I ought to give the first one a go sometime... Though not inspired. It's been my ambition to get through the big franchises like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and this... Whilst I quite enjoyed Harry Potter, I don't hold out much hope for the other 2... Fantasy/adventure typically not my thing.
There's a scene where three men are having a duel inside a wheel that's spinning. Each has their own goals, but the paths that got them there were exceedingly convoluted.
I know I'm just supposed to enjoy the absurd spectacle for the fun it is, but I can't. The convoluted journey wore me out.
I somehow didn’t remember this movie being this...messy. It’s one big jumbled mess. But I love it.
The pacing is odd, there’s lots of random plot stretches, it’s not nearly as tight and focused as the first, the characters and themes aren’t all completely payed off, and it ends on set up which is something I’m not a fan of for movies
That said
What an absolute banger
It particularly excels as a sequel, so many comedic beats and character moments that are all the better because of the first, the idea of the compass and Davy Jones locker are used creatively and the consequences and stakes are directly a result of the first movie. It balances a lot of characters really well I think, it might be messy but you never doubt why a character is there…
