It's pretty damn hard choosing my favorite sci-fi monkey film from 1968. 2001 is about the pinnacle of man, and Planet of the Apes is about the pinnacle of ape. They're perfect companion pieces to each other and would make a great double feature.
Way more subtle about race and class structures than Zootopia AND it doesn't deviate from the narrative to give their social commentary.
There are some parts that are a bit dated (I'm looking at you, monkey kiss), but the writing is so damn good. Rod Sterling, man, such a great writer.
The performances aren't necessarily... nuanced, but they work so well.
Knowing the ending, when Taylor is travelling across the seemingly beach, my heart was pounding. Probably my favorite plot twist of all time.
My friend had no clue about the ending and his mind was actually blown.
Seeing this in theaters was such a treat.
