Szegény Pierrot, Бедный Пьеро, Poor Pete, ¡Pobre Pierrot!
Absolutely ancient French animation from over 120 years ago in which a horny French geezer gets cock-blocked by a ponce who loves to play hide and seek.
Amazing that it still survives but of no great interest today.
And so, France breaks filmed boundaries for the very first time: five hundred individually painted images put together to create the illusion of 4-minute motion in the first animated film (having lasted originally around 15 minutes): paper-like characters created in hundreds of sheets of glass. The hand painted color is beautiful. For the huge landmark it is, my biggest issue was the inconsistency of the backgrounds, and this is totally independent from its age. Particularly when the wall door opens, the background does not match, and the dress of the woman is visibly juxtaposed with the background as well. Good use of close-ups in order to give a focus and concentrate on a particular sight or action.
Simplistic in its storyteling (we finally have some!), this is one gorgeous historical treasure to behold.

A Year of Film History Challenge
(watching a little bit of film history month by month, decade by decade)
Pauvre Pierrot (Poor Pete) from France is one of the first animated films ever, and I'd have to say the main message of this short is "Hey look what we can do!!"
Despite the flow of the animation being decidedly clunky, the artwork on display ain't that bad. The 500 individual paintings that made this cartoon possible definitely fit in with other French artwork from the late 1800s, in a style bearing some of the earmarks of Impressionism.
While Pauvre Pierrot ran for fifteen minutes in its original format, it was sped up and shortened during the restoration process...and thank god.…
The first animation? Historically very interesting. Also, this is the earliest actual story in a film that I have seen. This gets above 3 minutes and is very much worth checking out for the historical value.

comforting to know in the first animated cartoon they were trying to secure some pussy.
Kind of surprising to know that one of the first animated shorts was about a woman's side dude trying to stop the main one from getting laid.
Considered one of the first animated films, Emile Reynaud made this in 1892 and it consisted of around 500 individual paintings and it originally was 15 minutes long. Eventually it was restored at around 5 minutes long. Definitely worth checking out on YouTube.
Pauvre Pierrot holds the significant title of being the world's first animated cartoon (well, thought to be anyway...). History lesson time! Back when films were viewed as magical gimmicks rather than an art form, inventor Reynaud made advancements on the standard zoetrope that children would be hypnotised by, and patented the praxinoscope. The difference? The ability to give further dimensions to the strips that are used to project a flowing film. And that's where Pauvre Pierrot comes in (roughly translated as "Poor Pete"), part one of three short stories that combined to produce Reynaud's 'Pantomimes Lumineuses'. Whilst the other two are considered lost, this third has had four minutes restored from its original fifteen minute runtime. And much to my…
A pretty grim reflection on humanity I'm general that the very first animated film will forever be about a guy getting lightspeed horny and drinking to drown his sorrows
Not so different you and I
Also sweet Jesus that music is bad
Not quite the first animated film (that would be Reynaud's The Musician Monkey, 1878), but the first to sustain a narrative, as far as I am aware. Very clever -- another "Pierrot Le Fou."
sendo uma produção de 1800, Reynaud revoluciona a produção audiovisual e apresenta um espetáculo com uma nova técnica

Well golly gee, there ya have it! The first movie made that I can say I genuinely like. Maybe this is just because I'm fatigued from watching glorified gifs for like 2 hours, but I liked this! The animation was dope, and there was actually a story. This was really cute and I liked it!
The first full length animated cartoon, it's surprising to almost immediately hear music, have a functioning plotline around pranking another lover, and to have a unique animation style (which I guess would be the FIRST animation style). Unfortunately all we have is a restoration, as the original was 15 minutes long (the one I found on the web clocked at a measly 4). It's a very ambitious presentation of animated film, having characters occupying one setting so as to save time on art (as every image was individually painted). The comedy to wrap it around with a neat little bow brings a smile to my face that this happy and fun presentation would be how animation as a medium would start.
The first animated film! And the first to sustain a narrative! And also one of the first films in color (because its animated)! All of these revolutionary factors contribute to Pauvre Pierrot being one of the most delightful films I have seen during my journey through 1800s cinema.
Can’t imagine what it must have been like to see this in Paris in 1892. We often hear of the audiences fearful reaction to the Lumière’s L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat; I bet the reaction to this early animation was just as powerful.
Before Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came along in 1937 and revolutionized the animated genre, there was this: the simple tale of a knight who lusts after…
