Blind, gay, Australian Hugo Weaving is my favorite Hugo Weaving.

One of the funniest lines in film of all time.

A fascinating character study
Martin & Celia's constant tete-a-tete is a true masterclass
Great intrigue, great dialogue throughout

This is a film that contains great early performances by Russell Crowe and Hugo Weaving, careers launched by this drama. This film is about Martin (Weaving) who is a blind man and his sadistic housekeeper (Geneviève Picot) is in love with him. Meanwhile, he befriends the young cook (Crowe), who complicates his life, especially when Picot's housekeeper character gets a hold of him.

This is a simple film about friendship with memorable characters. Unfortunately, it feels like the United States in the 2010s isn't capable of making this small films artfully, outside of the occasional gem.

Recommended.

Film #2 in March Around the World 2016

Given its fairly schmaltzy material, Proof is really not that bad. It might be melodramatic, and its narrative seems a bit too manipulated (for emotional effect) to be all that effective, but this buddy story about an insecure blind man and his outgoing friend is quite entertaining and almost touching. Hugo Weaving is solid as the blind protagonist, but Russell Crowe really steals the show in one of his earliest roles, his quiet modesty clearly pierced by a sense of pride and attitude that makes for a deftly nuanced performance. Even if there is not much to latch onto in this film to make it truly successful, the way it crafts its relationships makes for an engaging and almost interesting watch.

Erotic dramas revolving around two hot guys and an ugly lady are my jam.

Sometimes foreign films can feel off for me, so the tone of Proof is kind of bananas, like some scenes have this super up-beat music and it’s like??? And some of it is borderline thriller, but underneath is a semi compelling story of a guy who’s taken advantage of because of his disabilities. There’s a few films thrown into one here, I’m not mad at it.

Joceline Moorhouse is such a tour de force for the very specific experience of watching Aussie movies thirty years after they were made.

You just get the rawest sense of 90s Melbourne and the Oz film scene. It's really a delightful, funny, dark movie about what it means to trust and to allow yourself to be vulnerable.

There's a few extras but it's essentially a v good cast of 3. Young Hugo and Russell have bonkers chemistry and Genevieve Picot is like Level 2 Misery stalker + evil genius.

It's so good. Go watch.

personally i think this movie is too short! or maybe it just feels very short. idk why i liked it so much— considering how horrible celia was— but i did! now where is my #fixit fic

Is young Russell Crowe a good actor? I think I prefer his early work, but I can’t tell. There weren’t many strong performances in this. The bigger plot points felt flat and a lot could be predicted beforehand. I wasn’t entirely sold on each relationship either. There wasn’t enough development for them in my opinion. The general idea was interesting enough I guess. However with the addition of random cruelty (which was exaggerated and unrealistic) I didn’t care.

Martin’s journey is so beautiful. The director does incredibly well to show us the pain of his life rather than tell us. His dialogue is often the opposite to how he is feeling and it is left to Weaving’s brilliant characterisation and the camera to let his soul open up. 

It is also incredibly funny and heart warming. It’s nice in cinema when the character’s find their way and learn to grow together along the journey.

Still my favourite Aussie film not only for capturing the essence of Melbourne, but also for authentically capturing this tormented man’s life and his growth.

Mateship in cinema! A classic Aussie trope but so tender to see when done well.

A great Australian film about mateship. Its good to see unique Austalians depicted in urban landscapes. I wish Australian cinema had more films like this.

Performances from all cast is tremendous. The film is funny and heartfelt at the same time and the journey is well crafted.

Dark comedy at its finest.

Everybody smokes cigarettes everywhere.
