“Enoch Powell was the MP for Wolverhampton South West when he made his ‘rivers of blood’ speech. His old constituency office is now a multicultural community centre.”
📝: Simple Channel 5 documentary looking at the aftermath of Enoch Powell’s speech on British life.
😅: Going in I was a little apprehensive about whether Channel 5 would get the tone of this documentary right. By and large they did, centring black and Asian voices.
👏: Fair play to them for managing to book the vivacious elderly residents of Marshall Street in Birmingham and the family of Ahmed Iqbal Ullah in Manchester.
👎: Unfortunately this documentary asks a question that we don’t need an answer to in the idents: Fifty years on what would Enoch Powell make of Britain today? Irrelevant.
