This is so gay. I mean, this is SO gay. Maybe you think you know how gay this is. Maybe you thought, "Oh, this is a lil gay" or "Oh, I'm sensing some undertones of homo-eroticism." Except you were wrong because Rope is perhaps the gayest movie in the history of gay movies and I loved every single second of it.
Oh yeah, good long takes, too.
imagine being phillip and you just want to have a nice gay vacation in the country with your boyfriend but he turns out to be a homicidal maniac
One of the most innovative films of its time, Alfred Hitchcock's Rope introduces a number of filmmaking experiments which, even today, remain widely unexplored in the world of cinema. It is an immensely captivating tale of two men who strangle one of their acquaintances, hide his body in their apartment, and then throw a party to determine the perfection of their crime.
Filmed in a manner that gives the illusion of being shot in a single take, the biggest strength of this film is how effortlessly it manages to engage the viewers in its expertly crafted plot & sustain the tension throughout its runtime even when the audience is aware of how the movie will end. The direction by Hitchcock is…
the gay subtext, 1-shot (6 actually), 1948, alfred hitch(cock) dinner party murdery movie we all needed
We only ever see the "S" on that huge blinking neon sign outside but I'm pretty sure the rest of it reads "-U-B-T-E-X-T."
I'm ashamed to admit, but I watched this for the first time two nights ago.
It is unbelievable.
I added it to my queue when Letterboxd shared their list of movies for Pride month because it piqued my interest, I thought, "but really, a big studio movie in 1948, how gay can it be?" And I was pleasantly surprised!
The long takes, the set, the matte painting trade-outs, the performances, the controlled moves of the camera, the reveals, the ending, all incredible.
When they pan left to very simply introduce Jimmy Stewart, I shouted.
When they're talking about killing chickens in an uninterrupted 10 minute shot until Phillip shouts and they cut to Jimmy Stewart who realizes that something is…
fellas is it gay to murder your friend just to impress your prep-school housemaster?
hot tip: when you're deciding which one of your friends to kill so you can have a murderous dinner party, don't kill the guy who's never late to parties..
i. the plan will go perfect and it was executed in broad daylight-
i. the plan is to throw a party, while you laugh in their pompous faces and cover your full apartment in finger-prints-
i. the plan is to invite the people you claim to be your friends and wind them up around your finger-tips as they dance on the string they didn't even realize holds their bodies up. the lives they live are dull and meaningless, does it matter that you are pushing the dial just slightly to the right-
i. the plan is to impress the one man who ever mattered and to one-up him at his own game. there's a part of you who wants him…
"Good and evil, right and wrong were invented for the ordinary average man, the inferior man, because he needs them."

A "BIRDMAN" LIKE CINEMATOGRAPHY WITH THE IDEA OF "THE PURGE"
saying that rope walked so birdman and 1917 of the like could run feels so gross and overstated. Rope makes me imagine what cinema would be like if directors continued adapting stage plays in the continuous long-shot form Hitchcock attempts with Rope
Another film with Jimmy Stewart at his best. Seeing the actors interact is a joy, and seeing Jimmy Stewart's character slowly catch on and realize how a hypothetical statement affected the worst boy ever. Consider this a cautionary tale for anyone who ever wants to make edgy posts online: if you're yukking it up with the creeps, they'll think you're one of them.
Hugely underrated. Shocking, sadistic, funny. Technically a major achievement, but Rope really keeps your interest because of the performances. I love Jimmy Stewart in this.
What a brilliant film, had me on edge the whole time with outstanding acting from everyone, especially James Stewart.
Oh gosh this movie made me have to stop and go drink some water in the middle of it because I was so tense... AMAZING
Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope (1948) is mostly remembered for its one shot gimmick, but to me, it is so much more. In Rope, Hitchcock was able to allow us to see, hear and feel the events of a very odd and suspenseful dinner party intimately through most of its characters. It’s a lesson in perception in film and it is so unique and so much more than a “gimmick” that I highly suggest all to give it a watch.
The entire film takes place in the penthouse apartment of two young men named Brandon (John Dall) and Philip (Farley Granger). In the opening minutes of the film they kill their old classmate David (Dick Hogan) by strangling him with a rope.…
Hitchcock does Nietzsche and a hell of a lot of gay subtext. Oh my god this is fantastic.
