julia roberts’ smile is (and i can’t stress this enough) the most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen in my entire life

I mean like...it could be your stereotypical rom com but it could ALSO be a comment on the erasure of the female identity within the bounds of the “traditional” marriage and how each of Maggie’s weddings represent her conforming to her fiancé’s personality and therefore the ideal woman and wife and by marrying Ike after starting to discover who she is she is exemplifying the 21st century marriage of equals and individuals instead of “man and wife”, emphasized by the atraditional marriage proposal at the end!!

this has such a stupid plot anyway and i was already losing interest but then halfway through taylor swift announced ts8 and how was i supposed to pay attention after that?

Runaway Bride is a ridiculous high concert with the lowest stakes. Mag's (Roberts) marriage anxiety seems like an easy thing to solve by restricting her relationship status to a domestic partnership. Despite its stupidity and my utter confusion as to Richard Gere's sex appeal, this studio rom-com is full of surprises. The secret weapon is having some of the most incredible actresses of 90's. Roberts, Joan Cusack, Rita Wilson and an explosive cameo from Laurie Metcalf make every scene more lively. What should be a bland trajectory turns into a pretty unexpected journey. Plus they shoehorn in a shopping scene to mirror Pretty Woman even though Runaway Bride is a completely different vibe. I'll give props to a movie I expected to be fluffy garbage.

she kept running away from men because she is a lesbian. she didn't know what real love was until she met a butch lesbian who uses he/him pronouns and is a journalist from new york. this is a very realistic portrayal of a beautiful love story between two uhaul lesbians getting married right after the first kiss, just a week after meeting. stop shaming them, embrace them. love is love.

Didn't actually watch this, but my drunk 80 year-old uncle thought a good Easter dinner conversation starter would be to give a very in-depth summary of this entire movie, and it was nothing if not thorough.

Honestly no idea what was going on

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere have plenty of charm together, but not enough to overcome how unlikable and even oftentimes boring their characters are. It follows a lot of the rom-com tropes, but this forgot to be both genuinely romantic or funny in the process.

i felt like this was a personal attack to me

this is one of my moms favourite movies, and i must’ve watched bits of it a ton when i was a kid. i’m shocked at how much i remembered. 

garry marshall is a strange filmmaker to me. he was a big part of reinventing the modern romantic comedy and also killing the enthusiasm for it. i’m really not a fan of the altman-esque big ensemble romcoms, i think it strings together weakly written characters to try and make a film better than the sum of its parts, but that rarely happens. 

anyway, i’m off topic. i like this movie a lot. 
i think i’d forgotten how absolutely charming julia roberts can be at her best. and the supporting cast, while maybe not given that much to do, are all strong enough performances that they’re fun and memorable. 

i don’t know whether it was this or addam’s family values that i first saw and fell in love with joan cusack.

In summary; this movie annoys me, but if i wanna paint my nails it’s the movie I’d have on in the background

ok? the acting and kissing in this is so strange - i would be enjoying it but then they kept finding a way to ruin it

HOT TAKE: this > pretty woman

I don’t know if this is the proto-Hallmark movie or if that formula was already well established, but boy howdy is this a stinkerooni. I can’t think of another movie where every actor is both charismatic, charming and relatively likable & at the same time profoundly boring and uninteresting.
And what’s with the alternate dimension reality of this small town where this local celeb runaway bride is “cool” & friends with all of her much cooler ex-fiancé’s. Are we rooting for the people who make out in front of the groom-to-be at the rehearsal? Is that romantic?
To call this movie weird isn’t correct, all the pieces are there & none of it is all that surprising, but there is something off.

tl;dr - This movie is the Larry Crowne of the 90s.

Gere's Ike portrays the plight of the cis-white male, foiled by the wiles of those legendary tricksters, women!

Julia Roberts is the second coming of Gloria Steinem as Maggie, small town hardware store employee with a penchant for bolting from her nuptials while on the path to self-actualization.

Ike stalks Maggie, terrorizing her in her hometown and turning all of her peers and family against her. At one point he bullies her into revealing her bare back so he can see if she is telling the truth about a tattoo.

But never fear; this is a movie that #believeswomen. For his crimes, Ike is pilloried in the town square...just kidding he gets the girl in the end because this is 1999.

What a cute story, but I feel like my family would be torn apart if I ran away from that many weddings. lol
