First time 80s slasher viewing always a time to celebrate in belials life ain't that the truth! This was another region B title that I owned for a few years but never got to see since only going region free recently. What a tease it was on my dang shelf for all those years! The weird and mesmerizing artwork that looks like some medieval wizardry penis knife 70s prog album cover concoction holy snikeys let's do this thang!
Yep loved it. This was such a uniquely low budget and bizarre little regional slasher. The sleazy breezy beautiful kind. Had me hooked from the amazing synths in the opening scene. I want those synths all over my body and in my…
I really don't think I had heard about this until last week? It just amazes me that I've been watching horror almost exclusively for most of my life and can still come across hidden treasures like this one. I hope it never stops!
This opens with someone robbing a bank and shooting two women in the process for absolutely no reason. I knew I was going to like this because the bank logo on the wall looks like someone made the letters too large and had to cram them in towards the end to get the full word.
I knew I was going to love this when the two women die sooooo dramatically, clutching themselves and sliding to the floor…
SATAN’S BLADE can best be described as Ingmar Bergman’s SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE on an edible bender with FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 in Andy Warhol’s jacuzzi. It could also be the real-life version of the movie-within-a-movie that John Travolta’s character is working on in Brian De Palma’s BLOW OUT. On the surface, SATAN’S BLADE follows a standard slasher template -- party animals visit an isolated location in the middle of winter before facing death by an evil force wearing black leather gloves. But below the surface, there’s no handhold on reality. This movie doesn’t deliver the coked-out splendor of BOARDINGHOUSE or WINTERBEAST; it’s more chill, kind of like what would happen if RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE went full slasher. So if…
As far as I'm concerned Satan's Blade is a hidden gem of regional 80s slasher oddities. Perfectly bizarre, low budget and hypnotic it hits that magical zone of "something ain't quite right here but why are my eyes glued to the screen?" Kinda zone. And when you start with opening credits that are grainy orange with incredible synths behind them you know you're in for a ride!
The isolated snowy cabin setting for a bunch of 70sified weirdos is just perfect. Which brings up the point why does this look ultra 70s but it's 1984? I would guess it's one of those films that started production much earlier.
Bad acting that sounds like dubbing? Mystical folklore and a creepy killer…
June Horror 2020, Day 16, challenge #25 - Six months till Christmas! Watch a Christmas-themed (or at least winter) horror film
This is a tough one to rate. I kinda liked it, but I'm me. It's bad, but on the "charming bad" side. We open with a visual representation of the title, yup that blade sure is Sataning up that tree alright! It's not really Satan's blade though, it belongs to some legendary mountain man who probably has a big moustache like everyone else in the Magically Disappearing Snow Mountains.
We get the most awkward check in scene ever, and not just because the "actors" can't remember their lines. "Do you want the cabin that had a fresh double murder…
Satan's Blade is one of those obscure low budget 80s slasher flicks that you most likely used to see on the shelves of your local video rental store before it faded into obscurity. However, in recent years it has been picked up and distributed by companies such as Arrow Video, and in 2015 it was put out by a company called Slasher//Video, both DVD and Blu Ray. I own the DVD copy put out by Slasher//Video though I do eventually want to get the Arrow Video Blu Ray at some point.
Satan's Blade isn't great, and objectively isn't really that good, but I had some fun with it. It's a silly low budget effort, and it does have some pretty…
I found this one in my YouTube recommended list. It’s always nice to find an 80’s slasher you’ve never heard of. If you've never seen it & are a fan of 80s slashers its not a bad watch & you can certainly do worse when it comes of horror films in general. Sporting a fairly decent body count, copious nudity, a catchy synth score, cheese galore, and a couple of twists that will keep the jaded slasher fan on their toes. There are many mistakes with the first time director and actors, but the film’s many failures work in the viewer’s favors. This one is best watched with a group of friends.
"This is my mountain, and people that come to my mountain must perish"
A cozy micro-budget regional slasher that is nestled in a beautiful snowy mountain setting and survives off of drunken acting, marriage drama and mystical killer terror. Falls strongly into the "so bad it's good" territory mainly because although it's definitely amateurish, the director didn't go down without a fight and you can see clear attempts in portions of the movie that he was trying to create something worthwhile. It's melodramatic, the pacing is bad and the kills aren't all that intriguing but goddamn is the atmosphere, tone, camerawork and score working on another level. Kind of love it.
A boatload of T 'n' A doesn't disguise the fact that eighty percent of the dialogue is ADR.
This one has an odd, melancholy vibe unusual for this general era. Similar movies where a ski or lake vacation turn out to be the worst idea ever tend more toward just sleazy/ grimy
Here, the grime comes from the bad print ...
I know it has a blu ray but as usual, I state my preference for something which looks like it came from the bottom of a suitcase found in an old basement (which is starting to feel a bit like an oldster affectation yet there are worse things to double down on, i guess, than liking shitty looking movies for nostalgic reasons)
The overall introspective feel of this is maybe making me think about how nostalgia is…
Satan's Blade does have some creative nudity, at least. A girl is wearing a long flannel shirt, which covers up her panties, but as she raises her arms to do some handiwork, you get to see a nice ass. I'll take that over typical 80s horror sleaze. This film is rather boring, but the picture quality is great.
I'm no fisherman, but an old guy is fishing when there's snow on the ground. He says he uses the same bait as always but the fish aren't biting. Does that have anything to do with the temperature? That would be my guess. Or maybe it wasn't supposed to be set in winter.
I will say one thing, one aspect of film…
