Words to begin talking about the experience that I have had with Serial Experiments Lain, the brilliant miniseries from Ryutaro Nakamura are so difficult to come up with on the spot, other than simply stating the obvious, it was a beautiful experience that I surely am never to forget in a long while. How does that change the structure of society and communication, etc.. God is an eighth-grade girl named Lain who controls people's fates at the tips of her fingers, stroking keys, staring deeply into the souls of the viewer (and any passerby in the show) with her empty almond eyes. Yet her eyes are filled with soul as she's plugged into THE WIRE, her only safe haven from her loveless family and friendships.
Each episode meticulously implements the feeling of unease, from the constant dutch angles, the bleak setting, lack of music, extremely human character designs reminiscent of Perfect Blue, and the overall feeling of emptiness that each episode blows as you are left confused sitting in your chair.

Took me a long time to watch this and I'm not sure why. Evangelion was my shit in high school, and still is, and this show was often mentioned in the same breath. I loved Haibane Renmei, which shared the same character designer/creator. I guess it got lost in the cracks.
Anyway, this is an extremely 1990s anime text. It's about the instability of identity, sexuality and alienation. Very similar themes to Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion, but I think this the most sustained analysis of late 1990s alienation you'll find in anime.
