Serial Experiment Lain, serial experiments lain, 시리얼 익스페리먼츠 레인, Experimentos en serie Lain
Words to begin talking about the experience that I have had with Serial Experiments Lain, the brilliant miniseries from Ryutaro Nakamura are so difficult to come up with on the spot, other than simply stating the obvious, it was a beautiful experience that I surely am never to forget in a long while. Anime is a medium that I have only recently started to explore more, but not since Neon Genesis Evangelion have I ever experienced something that ever felt like Serial Experiments Lain – avant-garde expressionism at some of the most beautiful that any screen would be lucky enough to host. If more well known works like those of Studio Ghibli, or Akira and Ghost in the Shell are…

I’ve existed on the internet for most of my living memory. It’s an essential part of my life and always has been. However, I do think that at some point there was a shift. The internet became more closely linked with our identities. It stopped being a place to view, to read information, to put out information. It began to become a place where we exist and live every day.
I think there’s a lot of fear that comes with knowing that, especially if you didn’t grow up embedded in online culture. Watching it from a distance or watching it as it began to happen, I can only imagine how scary that would be. I think this is where a…
Guys... I am no longer an Atheist. I now believe in a God... and that God is Lain. I identify myself as a Lainist and you should follow Lainism. It is Her command and She sacrificed Herself for our sins! She shall destroy all transphobes and reunite all users of the internet into one! Lain is our queen and savior and Lainism is the only true religion!
🙏🙏🙏 LET'S👏ALL👏LOVE👏LAIN! 🙏🙏🙏
In July 4th, 1947, a strange flying object dropped into a desert in New Mexico, USA. Even now, its identity has not been ascertained. Guesses became facts, and rumors became histories.
In 1984, Jaime Shandera, a TV producer, received an undeveloped roll of film in a brown envelope from an anonymous person. In the film was the MJ-12 document. It said that 12 people made a secret pact with an extraterrestrial under the President's direct orders. Roscoe Hillenkoetter, who was the director of the CIA when the Roswell incident happened, was the chief of the 12 people. It is well known now that President Truman's signature was copied from another document.
Vannevar Bush, who was a Head of Department in…
"Humans are all alone. They're not connected to anyone at all" -Lain,
Yep, the internet sure is crazy.
Serial Experiments Lain is a chilling (the whole series literally feels cold) examination of the social consequences of lives becoming lived online. How does that change us as individuals? How does that change the structure of society and communication, etc.. It's an interesting thing to see examined for someone my age, who went up through high school before having any meaningful internet access. I regret not being cool enough to have seen this in 1998 when this was a warning about the dangers of your world online but it is interesting to watch in 2020, especially during the pandemic since most of…
Morality, gender, philosophy, art, politics, religion...
All of these are ideas created by the magnificent human mind. Ideas that started out as simple fantasies existing in our heads but later became a part of the human condition and society.
They are now as real as the money you spend and the hospital that you go to see your loved one. They are real but they can eventually disappear once the the mind and Earth vanish. Like they had never existed.
Just like Lain, they are concepts that were not created by nature but instead by mankind. And for these to exist, humanity must validate their existence. Stay aware of their existence. As long as there is a record to these…
(NOTE: THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE ENTIRE SERIES EPISODE-BY-EPISODE. AS SUCH, SPOILERS ARE PRESENT ALL-AROUND. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED).
Few series have had their legacy defined by mystique and complete obliqueness like Serial Experiment Lain, delving into complex themes like the nature of reality, identity, and communication just as the internet’s interconnected stream of information began taking the form it takes today. Forming a trifecta of late 90’s anime mindfucks alongside Neon Genesis Evangelion and Revolutionary Girl Utena, a series like Lain was always destined to have niche appeal, something people will say is 100% the best while fully knowing that it's nowhere near accessible as something like Cowboy Bebop or, hell, even Evangelion to a certain degree (at…

incredible and heartbreaking and bittersweet and confronting and beautiful and and and. and i don’t know how to even begin to describe what i’m feeling right now. my heart Hurts :’)
(Up to Episode 5)
God is an eighth-grade girl named Lain who controls people's fates at the tips of her fingers, stroking keys, staring deeply into the souls of the viewer (and any passerby in the show) with her empty almond eyes. Yet her eyes are filled with soul as she's plugged into THE WIRE, her only safe haven from her loveless family and friendships.
Each episode meticulously implements the feeling of unease, from the constant dutch angles, the bleak setting, lack of music, extremely human character designs reminiscent of Perfect Blue, and the overall feeling of emptiness that each episode blows as you are left confused sitting in your chair.
I'm only five episodes in and I cannot get…
Took me a long time to watch this and I'm not sure why. Evangelion was my shit in high school, and still is, and this show was often mentioned in the same breath. I loved Haibane Renmei, which shared the same character designer/creator. I guess it got lost in the cracks.
Anyway, this is an extremely 1990s anime text. It's about the instability of identity, sexuality and alienation. Very similar themes to Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion, but I think this the most sustained analysis of late 1990s alienation you'll find in anime.
My biggest surprise here was how sapphic it was. I'm choosing to read this basically as a yuri text, and the show invites that reading. Lain,…
