Claire Danes is the main reason to watch this. She turns in a very likeable performance as Mirabelle Butterfield, a “shopgirl” from Vermont who works at Saks Fifth Avenue in Los Angeles and dabbles in art in her one-bedroom walk-up apartment. She meets Jeremy, a rather clueless art wannabe, at a laundromat. Out of loneliness, they get it on one night, but then an older man, Ray Porter (Steve Martin), steps in and sweeps her into his world of wealth, travel, and loveless sex. She falls for him; he avoids falling for her. Jeremy hits the road with a group of rock musicians. It progresses from there.
For those who think of Steve Martin mainly as a comic actor, this is a pleasant departure, based upon a novella he wrote. Don’t wait for him to do something funny. It never happens. Worth watching, even if it will never make anyone’s A-list.
