I should start with a warning. “Shortbus” features several explicit non-simulated sex scenes of both the straight and gay kind, penetration and ejaculation included. If this is not your thing, you should avoid the film. But if you´re ok with that, you´ll discover a surprisingly tender, empathetic, sincere, and occasionally funny film about sexuality, love, loneliness, self-discovery, and human connection. It even captures the post-9/11 anxiety of New York in an impressively nuanced and authentic way. There also is a fun reference to the classic Japanese erotic drama “In the Realm of the Senses”, which I liked a lot.
Acting and technical aspects aren´t really remarkable but I enjoyed the intimate mood, raw energy, and brave approach towards its themes. And I respect director John Cameron Mitchell´s attempt to, in his words, “employ sex in new cinematic ways because it's too interesting to leave to porn."
