Ok. Y’all wanna see a REAL six degrees of separation?
There’s a scene early on where Will Smith says his dad is directing a movie-version of the musical Cats.
And he says this... to IAN MCKELLEN.
“Someone is directing a film of Cats?” Stockyard Channing inquires while SITTING NEXT TO IAN MCKELLEN.
“Surely they can’t make the movie of Cats”, Donald Sutherland groans, INCHES FROM IAN MCKELLEN.
“He's going to use PEOPLE”, Will boasts, which IAN LAUGHS AT - YA KNOW, THE GUY THAT PLAYED GUS THE THEATER CAT IN THE EVENTUAL MOVIE ADAPTATION OF CATS?
Oh by the way this version of Cats would supposedly be by his father SIDNEY POITIER. An Oscar-Winner would direct, which, again, is what…
will smith's character in this and matt damon's in the talented mr ripley are fucking soulmates holy SHIT
The worst thing I can say about Six Degrees of Separation is that it doesn't have enough Will Smith. He is charismatic and has some great dialogue. But the film mostly pertains to how his trickery affects some affluent white couple. The idea of the film was worrying me a little, but I shouldn't have had any fear.
Donald Sutherland had a great performance in this and has a really good driven into madness storyline. Ian McKellen also has a smaller role that is just delightful as well as a very young Heather Graham who actually plays the most heartbreaking and sympathetic person in the film. But of course Will Smith blows everyone out of the water. He is an…
"Surely they can't make a movie of Cats?"
Paul (Will Smith), a young grifter, infiltrates a small circle of elite art dealers by claiming to be Sidney Poitier's son.
Six Degrees of Separation is often very funny in a drolly, dry and witty way. A lot of the credit lays with the clever editing that is used to great effect to punctuate the jokes. One of the best jokes comes in a scene that cuts back and forth from Paul rehearsing his act to the dinner party where he's employing it. In his practice run he lists Poitier's films. We cut from him alone facing the camera reciting to a shot of the dinner where the three old rich white…
the ultimate scammer movie, and also the rare perfect stage to screen adaptation. what feels fresh is the delight the scammed take in being scammed. they love being wrapped up in the intrigue, and their joy in recounting how they were tricked is such a clever device, illuminating just how deep the delusion goes. it’s so fun. and, true to its name, everything boils down to *six degrees of separation,* which, as stockard channing realizes, is simply an anecdote you share with someone you’re trying to amuse.
the cats stuff is too perfect as is heather graham asking if her resemblance to liv ullmann will hurt her.(note: the kittredge’s apartment is right out of cries and whispers)
One more for Ian McKellen's premonition:
Will Smith is good with Degrees,
Playing Poitier's son with such ease.
Although no relation,
Has enough Separation,
To get some rich people's keys.
-----and-----
"Six Degrees of Separation",
Was really just preparation,
For Ian McKellen,
Who wound up foretellin',
He'd star in "Cats" with such dedication.
Rizzo from GREASE and her husband President Snow from THE HUNGER GAMES are entertaining Gandalf from THE LORD OF THE RINGS in their niiiiice Fifth Avenue apartment (they have money) when all of a sudden their lives get flipped turned upside down when the Fresh Prince shows up at their door bleeding and talking in an overly affected manner about how he was just Central Park'd by some muggers.
They take him in, tend to his wound, and the whole time Fresh Prince is talking the goodest of game; he knows about art and literature and how to properly pour a bottle of wine. He charms them, pulls their heartstrings, politely challenges some old beliefs while introducing them to new…
An unremarkable yet surprisingly captivating story on social class. The plot drags at moments, and the dialogue is undoubtedly stiff at times, which allows the movie to move along in a somewhat plodding manner. Stockard Channing exudes a lot of charm in her role, and it's a pleasure to watch her. It's not the best, but it's also not the worst.
If any White Lotus fans need a quick fix: put this on immediately. Loving an experience to tell your crowd of people, regardless of how the other parties go on, once you experience it you are the central character. The love of scamming and being scammed.
Don’t you want to add sex to when you’re feeling good?
No?!
It's from the rich white people's point of view but Stockard Channing seizes a crown moment that elevates everything. My God, what a cast! Donald Sutherland with his smiles and warmth but scheming, always scheming beneath that beard. Heather Graham asking if she's cursed to look like Liv Ullmann!!! (yes). Will Smith learning to pronounce "bottle" like a rich person. And JJ…
