"Son of the South" is another film in the long line of the racism is bad collection. Following the true story of Southern White activist Bob Zellner. It's fine and watchable the same way Hallmark movies are. Just adding nothing new to a conversation that unfortunately is still all too relevant.
So this is being released.. during Black History Month... in 2021...
Everybody that was a part of this film belongs in JAIL.
What is the message here? That White Supremacists are redeemable human beings who will eventually change themselves and uplift the Black community?
JAIL.
*DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM*
son of the south sucks.
it's literally just white people bigging themselves up for one person doing the right thing, which is not judging people by the color of their skin. it's the sickest thing, doing this whole thing to encompass a struggle around a white person's journey.
i care about the civil rights movement, but i could care less if it's used as some mechanism to diffuse and lessen white guilt. yeah, this zellner guy did a good thing, but the glorification of one person's right doings can't negate the hate and hurt inflicted by this man’s people and shouldn’t even be appreciated to this extent; it feels like they're coddling... it feels like the negation of millions of…
A Lifetime movie of the week if there ever was, Barry Alexander Brown’s admirable though botched “Son of the South” is passing as a feature film. A messy biopic about civil right activist Bob Zellner, and based on “The Wrong Side of Murder Creek,” “Son of the South” comes during a moment when the social and political divide couldn’t be more stark, and though nobody is dismissing Zellner’s story, or Brown’s yearning to direct it, you can’t help but squawk at yet another film about the civil rights movement told from the perspective of a white man. It’s basically the watered down version of “Green Book” minus the Oscar pedigree.
well that was over quick. this movie was made for ignorant, stubborn mfs who need to educate themselves on these still existing problems. i think this pretty well written and directed movie could be a good one to start with because i am so sick of still hearing about my people getting killed on the streets for no reason by the people supposedly there to protect them when we have been fighting against all that for damn near centuries!
lucas till and lex scott davis did good with their roles. ludi lin as well. i personally loved dexter darden. that man never fails to put a smile on my face and mans got real good vocals✨
It’s fine. It’s heart is in the right place and Lucas Till is good but it’s an interesting story we have seen multiple times that just wasn’t as interesting this time.
Just passable. No standout acting performances and the pacing of the movie was strange at times. Zellner's story is not uninteresting, but I'm not sure this movie brings much to the table that challenges us in the current moment.
4/16: Dropped this from two to one star. What was I thinking?
Some may argue that the story being told in Son of the South is impertinent. Indeed, making a movie in 2021 about the grandson of a member of the Ku Klux Klan becoming involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960s has a whiff of the “white savior” trope about it. There is nothing new about this story, either, even in a context grander than the specific story it’s telling: A young man, taught to be closed-minded in the most exclusive way, gains some perspective of the world around him through an experience he cannot deny.

You know, there's gonna come a time when...
something really bad happens right in front of you,
and you're gonna have to decide which side you're on.
Not choosing is a choice.

Well, what are you doing all the way down here?
Trying to find out where they buried freedom, brother.
What are you doing here!?

An inspiring film that reminds us all that anyone can be a hero. Truly moving. The film we all need right now!
The dad heard the singing of a black choir and decided to leave the kkk 😭😭😭😭😭
Yikes. Terrible production values all around, acting, WRITING, directing... everything. I could forgive how chintzy it looked, if it had anything to redeem itself. But the writing is egregious. SNCC/Freedom Riders were integrated, incredibly organized groups. But it's like everything just... happens in here. It's kinda offensive and insulting to all those organizers and volunteers. The portrayal of different races were also shallow and pretty racist/stereotypical too. All the real life crusaders deserve so much better than this movie. And it just exists in the most tropey White Savior way. Such poor execution. Also, Brian Dennehy did not look well in here, so that was a shame too.
Um filme histórico! Que eu senti pouca presença. Tipo eu sabia qual ato estava acontecendo! Mas não entrei absolutamente na história!
