there was a screening of this tonight and i really wanted to go at first, but i didn't buy tickets because i realized i am way too possessive of this movie and the idea of sitting next to someone who might laugh at it made me wanna die, so i stayed home and watched my shitty looking cropped dvd because i care about the emotional purity of cinema
Middle of the road slasher affair with some neat dream/psychic link stuff. I’ve revisited this movie quite a few times... usually forgetting all about it a year later except for a few random scenes, how many Halloween similarities there are, and thinking about how much I like it’s unrelated sequel way better, but I gotta say... I enjoyed this rewatch a bit more this time around plus the Scorpion blu looks crisp and I really wish I could own that station wagon that the escaped maniac steals.
I have a soft spot for Sorority/Fraternity Massacre movies from my days of not being in college while living in a college town and dealing with drunk morons puking on my car, spray painting Greek letters on my house, pissing all over my front porch at 4am, shitting in my driveway, and passing out on my lawn... causing me to really relate to the killers in these movies lmao.
A plot stolen from Slumber Party Massacre, scenes stolen from Nightmare on Elm Street, the poster stolen from Brian De Palma and all the filmmaking and acting abilities stolen from local access programming.
one of the joys of movie-obsession is coming across a smart person with similar taste that you can share with and learn from - i love to hear how other people relate to art personally, to hear other perspectives, to grow my watchlist with obscure things people are passionate and excited about rather than top 100 lists. when i first came across one of nwoye's reviews a few months ago, i was immediately struck by how bold, passionate, and thoughtful he was, and how he challenged me to question my own perspective as well as those of other white critics. when i went to his profile i was so excited - it's rare for me to come across someone with…

16. A movie with “massacre” in the title
I’m not sure if it just doesn’t lend itself to repeat viewings or if I’ve grown as a person (spoiler alert it’s probably not that), but this drags a lot more than I remember. I love that this movie and it’s unrelated 2 sequels along with the 3 Slumber Party Massacre movies and the 2 Cheerleader Massacre movies all combine together to make one big semi-official/semi-unofficial “massacre” series, but it’s definitely one of the weaker films.
The first half of the movie is pretty boring except for some neat surreal dream sequences, but they also don’t help with the whole “putting you to sleep” vibe of everything…
do you know how in the late 1980's Barbie or Jem clothes would frequently be like pastel floral print fuzzy sweater over capri leggings with cute semi-matching headband or hot pink or teal structured cotton jumpsuit or crop jacket denim/nondenim over geometric fruit-themed belted dress and it always seemed like the clothes were three years out of date from what you saw in the magazine ads and made cheaply to fit on multiple holograms or barbies with a minimum of fuss even if the jumpsuit pantlegs would turn inside out and require a pen or pencil to make right-side out again? a total pain. so hey speaking of total pain like what if we interrupted your 12'' fashion doll mix/match…
Don‘t ask me the color of anything 🥴
Normally i love those cheesy 80s slashers, but this was meh.
A crazy fuck on the loose and heading straight to the Sorority House. Bad dreams. Elm Street kids. Dripping blood. Slutty Sara. Shower fun! Fuckin' filmstrips. Déjà fuckin' vu. Asshole Andy. Locking your door is a great idea. A fuckin' loon. Playing dress up. Escape of the creepy fuck. A U-Haul truck. Topless Tracy. Grand Theft Auto. Tipi-tonsil-hockey. The shorts guys wore in 80's slasher flicks. Kitty killers. Flashbacks. Scary stories. Gentle John. Bashful Beth. A dirty knife. An answering machine. Stab, Stab, Die. Hypnotizing like Biggie fuckin' Smalls. Lime Jello. Never fuck in a tent. A tomahawk chop. Courageous Craig. The fire ladder. Heavy breathing. Limber Linda. Knife-in-door. The Shovel of Mass Destruction. Bye-bye throat. Nothing special, but a fun watch for fans of slashers.
Shout Factory's now out-of-print release of Sorority House Massacre came with the UK version as a bonus feature in VHS quality, and I really admire the labels that dig that deep to present alternative viewing options. Not only is this a stupid ass movie, but it's a favorite of mine out of the Massacre universe, and all twelve of these extended minutes padded out the film perfectly for me. Halloween at its core, with a stupid psychic twist that I just love so deeply.

love it when a 74 minute slasher still takes a five minute break for a gratuitous montage featuring its female leads repeatedly undressing and trying on clothes set to an 80s pop song
This is essentially Halloween but with a familial twist that is more straightforward and better done. This aspect of the film allows for some really cool visual imagery and melding of reality and memory. This film could potentially have been one of the best slashers of its time but unfortunately it’s bland antagonist and uninventive kills detract from what could’ve been quite memorable. Nevertheless, I had a fun enough time with it.
The dress up sequence alone would make this a great movie. While it gets a bit frustrating later on (the bad-decision syndrome afflicts some of these fleeing victims), the first half is filled with eerie imagery, dyke haircuts, and ominous freakouts at the hospital. It sets the stage for the bloodbath extremely well, and the bloodbath itself is horrifying in moments, sickening, disturbing, violet, jarring. Unfortunately, there are a few moments where you want to scream at the characters for going the wrong way, picking the wrong weapon, or simply not being convincing in their plea for survival. Regardless, it far exceeds expectations for a slasher set at a sorority house.
