I don’t think this is as smart of a film as a lot of people think, nor do I think Korine was aiming for that. It’s just aged like fine wine and encapsulates a nightmarish ambience that I didn’t know I was afraid of until watching it.

like a Ke$ha video directed by Terrence Malick (*Do* The Wonder?), a dubstep belly shot of the american nightmare. Forever.
although, re the too-obvious Ke$ha reference above, Pussy Riot would also fit the bill (the Brony-baiting masks certainly raise that flag). first viewing was dominated by concerns with capitalism and carnal myopia, but i suspect that future visits will focus more on power dynamics and holy shit ashley benson.
also, there's a show-stopping sequence at the film's mid-point that involves a piano and an unexpected pop song and... cinema forreeverrrrr

I'll be honest. The first time I saw this I hated it immensely. But I was also oddly intrigued. When I watched this it was in a theatre during a sneak preview and after about fifteen minutes the first people started to walk out. After about half an hour, about half the audience had left. Those that remained were noisy, disinterested and annoyed, venting their frustration on the film.
In retrospect, this rubbed off on me and I guess I associated the experience with the film. But still those luring neon lights kept begging me to give it another watch. And when a mate of mine invited me to come over and watch what he called 'this generation's defining film',…

I love satire, almost all satire,
But I must admit...
I think that I adore this film even more than Dr. Strangelove.
I think that it's even MORE brilliant. And that's saying a lot.

This movie does a great job conveying emotions and experiences in a very subjective way. The disorientation, the blur of being you g and drunk. The tension of interactions with aliens.
The quick burst flash forwards are super cool. I took me a few to be sure they were flash forwards. They pop in them vanish adding to the disoriented, drunken vibe of the first bit.
James Franco is hilarious and ridiculous. The repetitive aspects of this movie add to the overall vibe and help convey the strangeness.

Spring Breakers rewards rewatches in a way not a lot of films do. The context of the entire piece really helps to strengthen a lot of the first act, which was my main issue on my first watch. While the ending may not be as impactful on a second viewing since you already know what's coming, the film as a whole becomes much stronger thematically. Ever since I saw it the first time I could not get it out of my head. I've been quoting Alien the entire week, I even got my friend to watch it and join me saying "LOOK AT MY SHEEEIIIT!"

The failing Letterboxd media has been wrong about this movie from the very beginning. It has great cinematography, an awesome soundtrack, and more to unpack than they'd have you believe.
Also, anyone who tells you Harmony Korine movies dont have plots is a stone cold moron.
Unexpectedly deep and riveting. What starts as an MTV love letter to the fabled Spring Break turns into a beautiful music video noir with wonderful characters. I mean just look at this shit.

The thing I say is that the characters should all just Get together with each other as a whole romantic (or any variant of relation) unit.
