A painfully honest, aukward, and emotionally fulfilling comedy. While slightly dated in terms of both the 'Swing' movement of the mid-1990s and the aftermath of the Tarantino-wave; the film frequently rises above a aged framework to bring exceptional moments of whimsy and humor.

Swingers won’t reach every audience nor will it add up to much, but it is a fun, rambunctious movie about buddies trying to have a good time. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau are excellent and their characters feel so real even when they're being over the top. I'm not entirely sure how well this movie really plays to modern sentiment regarding perceived masculinity, but it holds up well enough as a charming little indie film. It's like a chick flick for guys.

Swingers is one of these experiences you had to have when it first came out. As a late teenager at the time (closer to my twenties), what Vince and Jon do in this movie was pretty much what I was doing (except the whole Vegas thing and saying 'beautiful babies' a lot). Hanging out with friends, trying to look cool, going to new clubs and bars, buying expensive drinks (or stealing others at parties), playing Sega, hoping to get laid, helping friends get over ex's, etc...

The friends of the main character are portrayed so sincerely that they feel like your own. To me that was beautiful. Yes, they're supportive and funny, and at times even total dicks, but that's ok, because deep down they believe you are "money", which is sometimes all you need.

Capturing that brief moment in the 1990s when the '90s were trying to capture a moment from the 1940s, the Jon Favreau-scripted film comes complete with Rat Pack and big band-inspired energy. There's nothing technically wrong with this movie, but for some reason it just didn't land very well for me at all. I've heard nothing but great things from the film community and I enjoy some of Liman's other films, so I had a pretty good feeling I'd dig this. I honestly just couldn't relate to or find any kind of interest, sympathy or respect for any of the characters. Since this is a strongly character-driven movie, it felt like a hurdle I could never quite get over. The setting was great, music was fun, and the cast was solid...
