There are three rules that I live by:
1). Never get less than twelve hours sleep.
2). Never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city.
3). Never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.
Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese - Coach Finstock (1985)
When I was a prepubescent werewolf, Teen Wolf helped me get through my own physical changes and I, too, became super popular and awesome at basketball and van surfing, despite also being very short and not very good at anything physical when I wasn't wolfed-out, because then I was just a sweaty kid who was riddled with anxiety and friend-zoning most of my male friends in hopes to one day catch the attention of James Spader.
Now that I have been a werewolf and I am in my early 30s, this movie doesn't speak to me the same way, but it doesn't lessen the profound effect it had on me many moons ago, in giving me that reassuring glance into…
Lead by Michael J. Fox's charm and affability, this movie certainly fits in with the decade's wide range of cinematically depicted rambunctious teenage energy, but it feels disposable in comparison to the better, funnier, and more memorable high school classics of the era. The plot is utterly predictable, the production obviously done cheaply to maximise profit, and even though I like the cheesy soundtrack it too feels like a cheap afterthought. Not to say Teen Wolf doesn't have its enjoyable moments - again, Michael J. Fox is just so likeable -but the film barely utilizes its concept and what's left is a fairly mediocre pubescent story.
I love this film.
It helped me get through puberty.
I looked like a Yeti when I was twelve.
This film taught me that that's fine.
My mom during the first basketball game: He's gonna go wolf!!!
My mom during the final basketball game: aw he's playing as himself
How's your love life? Having trouble? Suffered another failed relationship? Listen up. I'll tell you what you're doing wrong...
Stop chasing your "Pam" and start accepting your "Boof".
She likes the real you.
Lycanthropy doesn't impress her.
Teen Wolf is so likable I want to pinch its hairy little cheeks.
I watched the film last weekend and it was the first time seeing it in over 20+ years. It was a total hot water bottle movie. Back in the late 80’s I watched it too much, one of those films I used to rent every other week (The Last Starfighter or The Boy Who Could Fly in the weeks between) until it screened on tv when I could finally record it onto videotape. Seeing it again was like revisiting an old, beautiful, hairy friend, and that I watched it in the same place as I used to as a kid (my parents house) made it that little…
I loved this movie as a child but I don't think the film holds up beyond mere novelty. It is definitely fun to see some of the transformation scenes and encounter classic 80s archetypes like Styles and Boof but overall the film is poorly edited and shot. In addition, while I accept that norms regarding gender, race, sexuality were different in the 80s and before, the sexism in this film (male entitlement, groping, etc.) went a bit beyond what I am willing to chalk up to "just being the time."
WARNING: Do not surf on moving vehicles.
Someone in my neighbourhood tried it once. Having wiped out in the process, he ended up a vegetable after sustaining severe brain damage. A clear case of don't try this at home, kids.
Besides that downer anecdote, this movie is so much fun! I had no idea. Somehow I went through all of my teen years being completely aware of it, yet never once having seen it.
Teen Wolf starts of like Tick Wolf. For the first thirty minutes you could spend the whole time just sitting there ticking off a checklist of teen movie tropes (a game of trope bingo, anyone?). Trying to buy alcohol with no ID, crushing on the blonde…
Hey I'm not a lycanist or anything but this teen wolf guy has a clear physical advantage on the court. If I saw this guy on the court I would be petitioning for drug testing.
I find it kind of interesting that message of this movie is basically "show your pubes and people will think your cool". I'll tell you what kids there's nothing cool about car surfing, it's a very dangerous activity and you shouldn't succumb to the peer pressure of teen wolves.
GIVE ME A KEG OF BEER
Executing a comfortably familiar 80’s tone that I adore but lacking any particular narrative of particular aim or journey. Realistically I dont think being super hairy and having claws suddenly makes you popular, even by the 80’s standard. Credit to Michael J Fox for being a distressed yet swag teenager in another role in the same year, miss the legend.
Maybe I’m a simple guy, but I enjoyed it when he turned into the werewolf and played basketball good.
A film I watched on repeat on VHS as a kid. Rewatched on the telly at work. Very enjoyable. Obviously not good in a traditional sense but it’s beyond that.
this movie is incredible. it's so cheesy and stupid that it's good. i love that they managed to incorporate car surfing, a fast-talking best friend that's always scheming, a girl named boof, and a scene where michael j fox slides around a hallway for like a really long time.
My favorite movie about overactive puberty and the perils of an all white high school basketball team.
