Coincidentally, when I decided to finally watch The Beyond on blu-ray yesterday, it was exactly 3 years to the day that Richard and I were in Rome anxiously sitting outside of a cafe where we were going to meet and subsequently have drinks and chat with Fabio Frizzi and his lovely wife. It was a surreal moment in time that I will cherish forever. As I sat there next to the man who has scored some of my favorite films of all time, I'm surprised I was even able to compose myself (I just rolled my eyes , but I'm not disgusted enough to delete the pun). Fear is a strong emotion, I recall as a teenager walking the curvy serpentine road that led to my home one afternoon when out of no where a speeding car came barreling round the blind corner barely missed penetrating my flesh with its grill! Eyes growing ever wider.. I pretty much had that startled look of a deer caught in the headlights down pat! Left me breathless, the pounding of my heart was mind numbingly loud! Even as I succumbed whole heartedly to the fear that gripped me I couldn't help noticing that I had never felt so alive!
Some people watch these kind of films because they are devoid of all emotions and watch films hoping to trigger that…
The Beyond is a hauntingly bizarre slice of weirdo Fulci that leaves us, the viewer, catatonic with an expertly orchestrated journey into the nether regions of chaotic hopelessness... a southern gothic menagerie equal parts disturbing and out there mind boggling—A surrealistic nightmare carnival of doom.
Anything but bland, Everything about this nutso movie is perfect for me: The bridge, the sweaty/swampy humidity that cowers over the whole production, the worker falling to his death, fucking spiders, the score, sepia toned basement chaos intro, hospital zombie shootout, the mind-bending finale, and death hotel USA’s hell basement—EVERYTHING... even the cleverly deceptive sluggish pacing that pops up here and there... purposeful if you ask me... only helping the dreamy surreal Fulci logic. Masterpiece if you ask…
"ATTACK DICKY! ATTACK!!!!"
Logic? Fuck logic! The Beyond defies logic, and with that delirious defiance, the feeling is as woozy and nightmarish as can be. Wounds burst with sickly substances, blood flows like a rollicking river after a storm, and the makeup designs are just terrific. Lucio Fulci's southern splatter flick, just like many hallmarks within the Italian horror genre, is flawed in regards to its characterizations and its hilarious English dubbing. It doesn't bother me, especially when the imagery is so eerily lush and the sounds are disgustingly primal. The Beyond is simply a mesmerizing horror tale, and I can't recommend it enough.
Oh, and those fucking spiders. It's some of the goofiest shit I've ever seen in a movie. Fulci, you were a man of wonders.
The second this movie starts it's already too late. Every moment seems off, wrong, dreadful. Scenes hazily slide into each other and even the spaces between spaces break down. Hell is a steady leak. Doom is slow but inexorable.
Forgive the anachronistic comparison, but this is Fulci's PRINCE OF DARKNESS.
While the film's disjointed story structure and a couple of nonsensical moments here and there definitely drag this one down to a certain extent, The Beyond favorably still offers plenty of exceptionally creative blood-soaked set-pieces that delightfully come from the crafty mind of Lucio Fulci during its moderately compact duration.
The foreboding score that naturally comes from Fabio Frizzi, and the relatively nightmarish feel to the film itself also benefit The Beyond absolutely as well.
This movie is simply obsessed with squishing people’s eyeballs out of their heads like a Panic Pete stress toy. Lucio Fulci was horrified by the human body, which he depicts here as a wet, mostly hollow container of tendons made of chewing gum and packed with almost magenta blood that shoots out of you like a t-shirt cannon if you so much as scratch yourself. The gore is beautiful and Fulci presents it to you like a cat bringing you a mole. Gruesome but almost sweet. But by the tenth mole you begin to have some questions about the situation with your yard.
There’s a mystery here about a doorway to hell but the characters are constantly and brutally punished…

This is unquestionably one of my favorite movies of all time so I will jump at any and every chance to give it a rewatch. It is an absolute masterpiece.

"i'm a doctor, i won't accept irrational explanations." what if our pictorial perception of hell was not just real, but tangible? it breathed, it bled, it oozed, it smelled, it had textures your senses didn't even know they could recognize? it would probably feel like this movie.
Back in the late 80's and early 90's, some of my best discoveries were raiding my Father's massive VHS selection, but even better than that was my cousins crazy horror collection—filled with bootlegs he’d order from fanzines, stuff that was a little more extreme than what I’d normally watch. He'd make vhs mixtapes that we’re to fucking die for, The first time I saw any Fulci was one of these mixes that had House by the Cemetery, The Beyond, and Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust. The copy of a copy quality left a little to be desired, but enter the DVD boom with that dope Anchor Bay tin and eventually the exceptional Grindhouse Releasing blu!

The thumbnail intrigued me while going through Showtime’s selection, which incorrectly dates this as 2017, so you can imagine my surprise the first ten minutes watching this thinking it looks just like the older Italian horror movies I’ve seen. Of course, I couldn’t wait to do a quick search on the movie and found out it’s early 80s, but I was really thinking a modern day director captured that aesthetic perfectly.
Italians, thank you for your delicious soundtracks they elevate your movies to true nightmare fuel.
spider's eating faces, zombies from hell, blood, guts, smoke and fog. This is like a horror fans candy store. The plot doesn't really matter- opening 'the gates of hell' just gives fulci an excuse to shoot whatever horrific thing he wants without it having to connect to a narrative. Incredible.
2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE
WEEK 7: LUCIO FULCI WEEK
I've seen comparisons between this film and John Carpenter's "In The Mouth of Madness," which seems apropos insofar as I will admit to finding both movies to be simultaneously disjointed and maybe just a bit impenetrable. Both movies also have a 5-10 minute chunk in the middle where I may have dozed off and woke up to discover that I had totally lost the thread of the movie, making the last 30 minutes a really strange and confusing ride.
I think I need to give this one a rewatch at some point to figure out what I really think about it, but in the meantime I'll give it a passing grade.
This movie has some really great scenes and some really mediocre scenes.
At the start of the movie I thought it was going to really like it. I mean Fulci was no Argento but it was clear had a style all his own and it looked pretty good. The first several minutes were really good, made me very scared, and aside from the out of place music (I think that's a common feature in grindhouse so it might not necessairly be Fulgi's fault) it was very good. Fulci seemed how to know how to make a good horror film.
But then as the movie went on things just dragged out and I was left waiting for the next kill to…
