when i say “representation matters” what i mean is a black and white photobooth video of a pudgy teen gay lip-syncing to “drop it low”
“In a country that doesn’t discriminate between fame and infamy, the latter presents itself as plainly more achievable.” ― Lionel Shriver, We Need to Talk About Kevin
There’s a moment in Sofia Coppola’s fascinating new film, “The Bling Ring,” in which Emma Watson (née Hermione) learns that her friends have been looting the vacant homes of young celebrities, and – with a reflexive vacancy – immediately declares, “I want to rob!” Watson is playing a thinly veiled fictionalization of teen fameball Alexis Neiers, a home-schooled reality TV star at the periphery of the crime spree that briefly enjoyed national attention circa the series finale of “The Hills” (or, as historians refer to it, 2010). Her lust for fame wasn’t necessarily…
excuse me but WHERE was emma watsons academy award for her "i wanna rob" line delivery
there was a brangelina reference & i almost started crying. i miss brangelina every day of my life. sometimes i'll just be existing, doin my thing, & i'll remember the divorce & my heart physically stops for a sec. anyway i gotta go finish my powerpoint on the rise & fall of brangelina that i'm presenting in my cinema studies class today -- wish me luck!
There is a lot of seemingly inexplicable behavior in this movie: why would rich kids who want for nothing rob famous people? Why would they be so brazen, leaving fingerprints and evidence everywhere, while never bothering to mask their identities? Why would famous people buy so much stuff? Why would they leave it all so unprotected? And why would celebrities like Paris Hilton allow Sofia Coppola to recreate the real life burglaries in her house?
The answer in all of these cases: the characters' (and the real life participants') obsession with exhibitionism, which is the singular motivation of everyone onscreen (and even some of the actors who are burgled but don't appear in the flesh). It's not enough to be…
bad movie. the only good moment was that one club scene where they danced to 212 by azealia banks
I have so many mixed feelings about this. Like, it's objectively bad but then there's a couple of artful shots like the far away robbery scene??? And the acting is cheesy but then you have Emma Watson knocking it out of the park? It's not BAD bad but it's bad enough to be bad but it's also supposed to be a satire and Coppola intended for it to be perceived as it is so does that make it a very good movie? Overall, I did enjoy this, and I really do think that Emma Watson deserves an oscar for her delivery of the iconic line "I wanna rob"
Chloe blasting 9 piece by Rick Ross on the way to the beach to smoke💯 Mood
also people criticizing how awful the outfits were as if that wasn’t the whole point???😂😂 you can clearly see the transition from their forever21 fits to classier, trendier style once they start robbing.... going back to the idea how much celebrity status is associated with superficiality like designer clothes and other material items
It has its merits and I’m sure there are more on repeated watches but I was kinda bummed with it; but only because it’s in Sofia Coppola’s catalogue. Disregarding that fact, it’s a decent movie about ~super rich kids~ spiraling out of control. Leslie Mann was perfect casting for her role
eh, not a very big fan of this plot. kinda boring but i love emma watson and taissa farmiga so
oh to be robbing paris hiltons place on multiple occasions with taissa farmiga and emma watson
Emma Watson should never have to do a valley girl accent ever again. That was the biggest crime throughout the whole movie.
On the one hand, it's pretty wild how little I cared about literally anyone in this movie, which made it hard for me to really connect at all with anything. There is just a level of privilege, the "wealthy stealing from the wealthy" plot, that all feels so distant and foreign. It doesn't really help that the characterizations are about as sparse as they get.
This also feels like maybe the least interesting in how its shot? That could be intentional though, like balancing out the wealth with shots that feel so simple?
On the other hand, I think this is a pretty fascinating entry in Coppola's filmography. It's like this Venn diagram of the extreme suburban boredom in The…
