The ringer but it’s von trier owning the bourgeoisie.
Normies enter this commune dedicated to “spazzing”, ie acting out mental disabilities... often for manipulative and disturbing ends, though ultimately for some sorta therapeutic relief from #bourgeois #society.
Very tasteless, often mean spirited (which von trier goes for as a career, his callous sensibility fuels the narrative tension of each of his movies) but still charmingly positive-minded in a surprising and flattering way. The surprise is people coming together rather than coming apart, earnestly escaping maybe from demeaning capitalism and violent ~patriarchy. There’s a viable politics there, something thoughtful and endearing even if it’s wrong and cringe.
Also visually gorgeous, despite the whole “unstylized” style—ie the “shitty” technique. The formal ideas of the dogme95 manifestó make an attempt at real realism, like a documentary, but ends up more like a reality show.
