Elisha Cook, Jr. is a character actor I’ve seen in countless films: The Maltese Falcon, Rosemary’s Baby, Shane, etc. He always seems to play a weasely, emasculated nimrod. Clearly Elisha excelled in these roles; he was cast in over a hundred films.
In the last twenty-four hours, though, I’ve watched him in both The House on Haunted Hill and The Killing. It’s just... too much.
I’m not sure how fully formed into *ssholedom Kubrick was at this point, but Elisha was probably quite the plaything. Cook Jr.’s character is only one or two hysteria tiers below Shelley Duvall in the Shining, and his wife eviscerates him like she’s Jack Torrance fresh from a Grady pep talk.
The upside to being a talented character actor is you get a lot of work. The downside is that if you’re a character actor so perfectly suited to playing THAT GUY, you, in essence, become THAT GUY.
