“I’ve got nine more” is one of THE funniest lines. As a diehard Airplane! fan I can’t believe it took this long to watch this.
"Just think...the next time I shoot someone, I could be arrested."
Gets funnier every time I see it.
I'd known her for years. We used to go to all the police functions together. Ah, how I loved her. But she had her music. At least, I think she had her music. She'd hang out with the Chicago Male Chorus and Symphony. I don't recall her playing an instrument, or being able to carry a tune. Yet she was on the road 300 days of the year. In fact, I bought her a harp for Christmas. She asked me what it was...
"Goodyear?" "No, the worst."
Unless someone out there wants to go to bat for Austin Powers, this is the last truly great, truly silly mainstream film comedy, with a deadpan heart and a slapstick soul. But on top of all that, there's an almost cathartic anti-authoritarian edge here, intentional or not, showing the adventures of an entitled idiot who causes havoc and disaster wherever he goes, only to be celebrated and commemorated for it because he's a cop. Thank God it's only a movie.
Airplane! is one of my favorite comedies of all time, so it was no surprise that I ended up loving The Naked Gun as much as I did. It has all the same hilariously bad Dad-joke puns ("Goodyear?" / "No, the worst.") and masochistic slapstick (a man gets shot and then stumbles around incurring a series of much more minor injuries) that made me fall in love with Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker's masterpiece. There's an extended joke about Drebin going to the bathroom with his mic still on that had me rolling my eyes, but if anything this is just a testament to the way Zucker is willing to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks (there's so much background detail…
Isolation comfort movie.
"Hey, it's Enrico Pallazzo!" might make me laugh more than any other line in cinema. Don't know why.
Doesn't get much better than "Naked Gun",
From every one-liner to every pun.
Leslie Nielsen carries the load,
In Airplane mode,
Which is always a ton of fun.
A dazzlingly irreverent comedy. There's a transmissible sense of enjoyment which materialises from the late Canadian born Leslie Nielsen in this David Zucker directed comedy based on the character Frank Drebin, who Nielsen portrayed in the ABC television series Police Squad! which was terminated after just four of its six episodes were broadcasted in 1982. It starts energetically and refuses to take a breath throughout it's 85-minute runtime as Drebin generates repeated catastrophes and delivers his lines with straight-faced perfection.
The plot to prevent an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II by Fantasy Island actor Ricardo Montalbán, the original television series not the atrocious Jeff Wadlow reimagining, is absurdly ridiculous, and Montalbán is evidently taking great pleasure playing the deceitful…
4 stars alone for the smile Drebin gets when he realizes he can be a star umpire.
The real question that The Naked Gun poses is not why it's one of the funniest spoofs ever made, but why virtually no subsequent movie in this genre has been any good at all. I used to adore this sort of movie when I was a kid – “Airplane!”, “Top Secret”, and the six-episode "Police Squad" show, which became the basis for the Naked Gun series, were among the funniest films I knew. When I first saw The Naked Gun on VHS when I was ten, I was in uncontrollable laughter for the first few minutes. That was my standard of great humor at the time.
But the following decades gave us a variety of similar spoof films, some of…
100%
Must I say that I absolutely adore this movie? Given that it is my second favorite film of all time and I die laughing each time I say it, I think I can answer my own question. I know that not everyone agrees with me on this. Most people think Airplane is better. And I absolutely love Airplane. But I prefer this. Why? Because this time I laughed so hard that I got the hiccups. And this is my 7th watch! That’s why.
I don’t have much to say here, so I’m just going to go with the basics. Is this a well made movie? Not really is the answer. Do I care? The answer is I couldn’t care…
I don’t know why these ZAZ movies are so hit or miss for me. Airplane and Top Secret are two of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. But I disliked this one and didn’t think it was very funny. I guess I don’t think Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley are funny enough to carry a whole movie. Leslie just moonwalked dressed as a baseball umpire and I was actively annoyed.
I'm not sure why, but Naked Gun humor really hits for me. It's somewhat refreshing to see some very intentional physical comedy, and movies that aren't afraid to embrace being built around one liners and one-off gags. Feels very much like a spiritual predecessor to the Johnny English type of movies. Leslie Nielsen is absolutely wonderful.
A flavour of comedy that is rare in modern film. It might not be as good as Airplane! but it shares the same DNA. The opening scene does a great job of summarising what your going to get.
Double black diamond hilarity warning. Dizzying 17 JPMA (joke per minute average) with a staggering 99% conversion rate. Needed to buy an inhaler after watching this. I made it 30 minutes in before writing Leslie Nielsen’s residual check myself, choking back tears. I’m not even gonna make an OJ joke, the dude just kills.
Still one of the best comedies of all time only slightly surpassed by it's sequel.
Definitely in consideration for best mid movie music video.
⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ For the great Leslie Nielsen and protection
Gag a minute perfection, some of the jokes haven't aged as well as expected but nearly everything is timeless
