Yeah, I feel like I would have loved this movie a lot more if Chaplin hadn't made it about a dictator. Oh whoops, sorry, wrong movie, where am i?
Really enjoyed this. Engaging performances. Jim Cummings is obviously uber-talented. Looking forward to following an exciting career. Has a Jody Hill/Danny McBride vibe which is a great thing.
Macon Blair is great as always.
Watched at the Vancouver International Film Centre.
Fucking wow.
I saw the short film a while back and was a fan and have been on the watch for this for a while. I had expectations for it from the trailer but man did it blow it out the water. It is honestly one of the most refreshing and incredibly brilliant movies I've seen in a long time and it's sad that it will widely go unnoticed due to the fact that it's not had much of a spotlight on it. The raw human emotion in this movie though and the way its written is utter genius and the fact that this is written, directed and performed by Jim Cummings is honestly extraordinary I can't even put into words how amazing that is that he was able to pull this off as well as he did and I honestly implore anyone to see it.
Have extremely mixed (and maybe even negative) feelings about the ending, but I loved this movie. The hands up game scene made me smile so fucking big, as did the last shot before the credits. A very sweet, emotional, and hilarious film.

I've been hearing hype about this one all year and it did not disappoint. I've seen Jim Cummings previous effort Minutes and although I really enjoyed that it did nothing to prepare me for how genuinely moving and special Thunder Road is. If the Oscar's had any sense at all Jim Cummings would win Best Actor easily, and I'd be willing to bet we won't see a performance as powerful and soulful as what we see here. From the opening scene I was completely blown away by the weight of emotion he brings on screen. You feel his pain and you experience his transformation throughout the film. It's a sad film about loss but it never allows itself to become full on depressing and there is tons of great comedy to balance the tone. I would recommend and encourage anyone to watch it. This was really really exceptional.

When my mother died, I remember singing one of her favorite songs Journey by Lea Salonga in front of our family, relatives, and her friends. Looking back, it was honestly embarrassing, considering how I was a crying mess while singing it. I didn’t cry throughout the whole week of the funeral, only the morning of her burial, but it took an hour for my sister to calm me down. It was a mess and that day changed my life, because I celebrated my 18th birthday, my graduation, my first day in the university, and other events that we’re both looking forward to, without her. That…
Watched this on a plane and got emotional which is not ideal. Great movie though.
I really loved the premise of this movie, that you can take a stock comic character of “doofus self-serious cop” from 7000 movies from the past 15 years and then just keep the camera on him for an hour and a half while the joke melts away and the real guy dealing with divorce and anger issues and a learning disability and insecurity and grief is just up there dancing.
Jim Cummings gives one of the best performances of the year in THUNDER ROAD. I was floored by his commitment to all aspects of production both in front & behind the camera. The film presents the ups and downs of life with such emotional honesty, you’ll either laugh or cry till it hurts.
Jim Cummings understands that there's a very fine line between cringe comedy and devastating tragedy and his near perfect performance displays both seamlessly. He is a master of critiquing the shortcomings of a society controlled by even the least toxic of masculinity while also making us deeply care for the humans at the center. I had absolutely no hesitation in calling this a masterpiece on first watch, and I have no qualms about it now. This is everything microbudget cinema should aspire to be.
Another movie thats comedic but realistic. Personally I prefer Wolf of Snow Hollow, but these are two really fun and very well acted dromedies, I'm starting to love Jim Cummings as a director and actor, Thunder Road another movie were the writer director stars as a cop minus werewolves plus marriage story.
B+/7
I liked it. Cummings has talent. Doesn’t quite transcend its indie boundaries but does good work within them.
A strange turn for the Mad Max franchise. I'm not entirely sure wha-
Hold up...
Ok...
ya... I see here in my notes I did write down "Fury" but my chicken scratch made it look like I wrote "Thunder".
My b.
Stay tuned for my thoughts on "FURY Road"
This was good tho.
Writer, director, editor, composer, lead actor Jim Cummings is a F... rock star!
I love this,
The contrast between cringe comedy and the tragedy of life. Jim Cummings does amazingly in the writing and performance. He uses silence in performance especially well, it lets you breath the moment of the film. His directing is good, for a relatively new director some of the camera work he employs are really great, one I can remember is the shot of him and his daughter in the car as she has makeup on the camera slowly creeps in and I really loved that shot. His conversation writing is also amazing I really love the way he does one to ones.
There are a few problems I got from this was the editing, there was a few…
jim cummings one of the most electric performers working in hollywood today
Honestly depiction of mourning a loss. Honest depiction of divorce and separation. The child's sense of feeling torn was spot on. Looking forward to watching ballet or a play or a movie like this in a dark theater and crying a lot, post pandemic.
Minus one star for making cops the protagonists, because ACAB (even fictional ones).
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Jim Cummings legit said I don’t need anyone, I’m gonna do all of this myself. What an inspirational story this man is.
His wild performance is probably the most memorable portrayal of grief I have ever seen. Not just grief, but love, anger, betrayal, solidarity, and really the tireless exhaustion of life. The humanity he captures through his performance is just unreal. Really got me choked up.
The slow zooms, single long-takes, wonderfully acted monologues, and cine. Just wow. Cannot believe this was made for only 200K.
Jim, you are the shining light of independent filmmaking. Keep on leading the way big brother.
Wow. I cannot believe this film is not seen by everyone in the world by now.
Jim Cumming's expressive, over-the-top scenes are not dramatic or funny or charming or whatever it is he was going for. They are whiny and grating on the ears. Thunder road is otherwise a mostly entertaining off-beat comedy-drama about a man's struggles with his job and personal life, though certain points seem underdeveloped. 7.5/10 closer to a 7 than an 8.
