(i have some major misgivings about the last 15 minutes, which feel — at least on first viewing — that they blunt out what could have been one of the great movie endings in recent memory, but everything you heard from Cannes about Maren Ade's shaggy epic is right on the money. the shortest 160 minutes you'll spend at the movies this year).

Almost everyone in my theater was laughing for about three hours straight. I think that speaks for itself; I've never quite had a movie-going experience like seeing this film with an audience.

That the humanist ideal of reconstruction Europe and the current European community can’t be reconciled is old news, but it takes an Andy Kaufmanesque prankster in a very old fashioned sentimental mission to, if not exactly exhume the corpse at least bring it into sharp relief. You'll laugh, you'll cry and things will just pass away. And it is really very very funny. Experimental human behavior played with broad Cassavetian exuberance at its best. Also, in the age of bloated festival film, it is always joy to get a 160 minutes one that needs every second of it to count.

The tone of this one is so fascinating to me. It’s such a generic Hollywood style broad feel good dramedy story, except it’s been distilled and translated into a slow paced naturalistic euro-drama in the telling. It’s just what you’d imagine a bad stereotype of German comedy would be. Such a strange and wonderful mix though, with some utterly hilarious moments and wonderful performances and plenty of moments that come out of left field. Was fun to watch again.

One of the most awkward movie experiences recently

Whilst ostensibly a comedy - and there are brilliant cringe worthy moments - the humour comes from the fragile drama in the father/daughter relationship between the central characters. Their loneliness and their inability to connect with each other is painful to watch but all the more gratifying in the end. Wonderfully observed and performed and with the best karaoke scene since Only God Forgives....

I watched this the first time when I was far too young. I remember knowing it was good then but being a bit too weirded out.
Now I feel I can really appreciate the incredible movie that this is. Patient, unforced, life. This is a perfect movie about a woman learning to live her life rather than do things in her life.
Beautiful in every sense, simple filmmaking to inspire and induce thought.

This is my favorite movie of the 2010s, maybe ever. It's got so much soul but it's so sad, and yet also just incredibly funny at times. The entire third act is just perfect. My favorite things are movies and shows that mix humor and sadness, and this film perfectly combines the two.

Also, The Cure's Plainsong at the end is maybe the greatest closing credits music ever.

I barely felt the runtime of this movie. I think it was because it is so full of love and at the same time so crazy. It was very unconfortable to watch but incredibly entertaining and fun too. It is not only about the father-daughter relationship, but also about private and professional life and made the change between these topics so easy and seamless
