For years, [adult swim] has been home to the largest concentration of oddities on basic cable. Because of its stoner-comedy roots and its late night time slot, there's an apparent willingness to derail itself in favor of complicated humor instead of traditional but college-aged skewed animation. I thought, "I've no idea what the fuck this is, but everyone else is watching it so I might as well."
1:30 - Got the joke.
2:00 - Started to feel tetchy and annoyed and thought I was going to turn it off. Decided to try and stick it through to the end.
3:30 - My feelings started turning more positive when I saw Coat and Lars von Trier as a pie.
4:30 - Positivity turns to confusion because it's a cartoon...no wait it's a western....no wait I've no fucking idea what's going on.

I'm furious. Half my trivia group hadn't seen this before and wanted to watch it. But they wanted to do it between rounds, in three-minute chunks. The heathens! There's probably a lot of thoughtless 'zOMG 5 stars most epic evaR!!" reviews here, so let me say, unequivically, Too Many Cooks is legitimately a 5-star, best-of-all-time short film.
Between its experimentation with styles, how it examines how we approach things that are familiar enough to be disposable, the subtle, creeping confusion of a world filled with the same people in different roles - or the same roles - forever, how we are trapped in a media landscape that hates us but needs our eyes to sustain itself: Too Many Cooks interrogates our world in a way that little else has.
