I used to have Total Recall only rated 4-stars but after watching it last night I realized the error of my ways. This is a 5-star movie.
This fucking movie, this movie right here, has some insane re-watchability. In the 4 years Richard and I have been together we've watched it at least 3 times and somehow, that doesn't seem like it's enough. I used to watch it pretty regularly in the U.S. as well, it was on TV often and Total Recall is not a movie you just flip past while channel surfing. You land on it, you say "FUCK YES, SEE YOU AT THE PARTY, RICHTER" and you watch it. It's just, culturally, what Americans do.

indulges every single sleazy, cartoon american action fantasy impulse there is with the admirable goal of creating a genuinely tangible reality out of it where a construction worker can through sheer force of belief in that dream (of shredding bad guys to bloody bits and kissing the girl) ultimately save the planet from corporate privatization and environmental destruction. simply one of the best movies
Paul Verhoeven hasn't disappointed me yet with the films that I've seen from him so far, and Total Recall is no exception to that as it is yet another profoundly clever action sci-fi feat from Verhoeven himself.
With Schwarzenegger as the lead role here as an ordinary construction worker who suddenly finds himself questioning what's real or not after a flimsy procedure in order to voluntarily undergo the thrill of Mars without truly having to visit there, this relatively inclusive tale resolutely puts the viewer into the same thinking space as Schwarzenegger's character himself while he truthfully embarks on a key mission to Mars trying to dig into his past. Love as memory - a harrowing action spectacle of unwavering totality. Verhoeven is in complete control of every movement, hue, and excessive, explosive burst. Simply a jaw-dropping analog entity. Total Recall confronts the illusion of homely spaces, the physical trek to and from the workplace, and the prodded designation of our society - each separating a larger threat of capitalistic complacency, and it kicks ass while doing it.
when cohaagen says "ill blow this whole thing up and be home in time for cornflakes" does he mean he cant just eat corn flakes whenever?? i know its a breakfast food but hes a rich guy its not like youre only allowed to eat "corn flakes" at specific times im broke as fuck and i can make it "time for cornflakes" whenever i want
There’s a strong argument to be made for TOTAL RECALL as the greatest practical effects movie in history.
I just love everything about this film: the practical effects; the over the top violence; Ronny Cox chewing the scenery like a man possessed, Michael Ironside’s sulky and snarling performance; Sharon Stone looking better than she ever has; Arnie’s super camp run after killing the gang lead by “Harry from verk”; the security guard who doesn’t even wait until he’s out of shot before giving up the chase after Doug Quaid smashes through the X-ray scanner, with a gun. There are a million other things but I’ll stop there as I could be at it all night otherwise.
Then at the centre of it all is the big man himself, playing an everyman as only a gigantic genetic freak like him can. Many people say it would be a better film without Arnold Schwarzenegger, but for me he’s the pumped up cherry atop a gloriously over filled cake.
Everyone should watch this film and relax, they’d live longer.

Imagine a colonial power keeping a population of underpaid immigrant workers in poverty, exploiting their labor in order to plunder natural resources for personal gain. Lol, what will those wacky sci-fi writers think of next!?
Everything a blockbuster should be. It's got crazy fun campy action, cheesy one-liners, pulpy violence, and a plot that invites endless discussion about the movie itself. After watching a lot of dreadfully existential and philosophical films (Nicholas Winding Refn don't worry I love you) this was an enormously welcome change of pace that got me so completely lost in the world of the movie with so many fun twists and turns. I thought I had it all figured out but the movie acknowledges how obvious it is about halfway through and from that moment on I couldn't even begin to guess what was going to happen next and it was so much fun. I literally chuckled with joy when the credits started rolling, I forgot how good blockbusters can be!

Schwarzenegger's line delivery is just as questionable as ever. But Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin are both gorgeous, so...thumbs up!
All I remember about watching this movie is having the first and biggest existential crisis of my life afterwards. That shit scared the living day out of me. Maybe parental guidance ratings aren't completely useless after all.

Ok. So I went into this movie looking for some cheesy 80s movie to use as background noise during my classes. Instead, I spent the next 2 hours glued to my computer watching one of the greatest action movies I've ever seen. I don't even know how to describe why I like it because I really shouldn't like it as much as I did, but it was incredible fun. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in his element as a walking slab of meat and delivers some of his greatest one-liners ("Consider that a divorce!" and "Screw you!" are some of my favorites).
