yeah yeah gay men may have the twinks in Italy movie, but lesbians have every Moomin ever and a lovely film about their creation so who won here
The problem in media with depicting gay life is that it often exists in a digital vacuum. Rarely do we see lesbians with lesbian friends, and Hollywood especially assumes that friendship abides by the statistics of society, in that it believes every gay person exists in a bubble of nine heterosexuals. Tove knows that LGBTQ people band together, often as a survival strategy, and acknowledges this. Tove and Vivica dance in a crowded room of women who love each other the way they do, and can kiss there the way Vivica could kiss her husband in the outside world if she wished. This scene is so filled with freedom and life, a quality of this romance that makes it so charming.

the remarkable and assorted biographical strokes drawn on Tove cover many canvas sizes of a personal kind. curating an exhibit of an artist’s struggles and insecurities, the unconventionality of Tove Jansson’s art doesn’t only stray her away from her initial artistic pursuits. it also sours her relationship with her stern father, a sculptor who admonishes her to conformity in vain. over and over, she fails with her effort to adhere traditionally (ie., her marriage with a man, her venture to conformist art). while Tove is not a film vehement on casting up the brickwork of Jansson’s creative process, the dismissive attitude she has on herself as an artist, the belittling regard she gives her famous works opine on the constricting…
The Moomins are recognisable in many countries around the world. While watching the anime television series as a child in the early 1990s, I became a fan of Moomintroll and his family. My fascination then developed beyond the programme when I became interested in the original artwork and books by Tove Jansson in my adult years. However, unless you’re a Moomin super fan, Jansson’s name probably doesn’t mean much to you. But for those spellbound by Jansson’s work, Jansson’s native Finland has now made a biopic about how her early relationships influenced her work.
At the start of the film, Tove (Alma Pöysti) decides to move out of her parents’ home due to her father’s condemnation of her work. Unfortunately,…
This was incredibly charming and heartfelt! Also, the Moomins are kind of my childhood, so naturally this spoke to me. Wonderful performances by Alma Pöysti, Krista Kosonen, and Shanti Roney!
Absorbing period piece with great leading performance by Alma Pöysti. The way this film is given room to breath certainly turns into one of its strongest assets and those party scenes are fun to watch. Very pan-European soundtrack that avoids Finnish cliches highlights the universality of Tove instead of trying to exploit her art and life. The choice not to make this film in Finnish like happened with another Finnish Swede artist in biopic about Helene Schjerfbeck just adds to the fact that it's more about the universality of art than national myth building. Helene (2020) ends in museum but Tove ends under the open sky by the wild sea. The film portrays finely both artistic and personal struggles, finding great empathy for its characters and successful balance to focus on multiple subjects (love, family, art ofc). It's also beautifully shot and staged, letting room for glances and emotional surprises. Probably Bergroth's best film so far.
Lesbians and Moomins is such a huge fucking mood I never wanted it to end.
im not capable to distance myself from what Tove and her novels and loving women mean to me so i really dont know what to say about this as a movie other than it was a touching experience to have the film focus on Tove's love for women and to be able to watch it with my girlfriend and cry in her lap.
left me thinking the quotes of Tove's letters where she speaks about the experience of learning she loves women: "Se on niin sanoinkuvaamattoman suuri ihme, on kuin löytäisit uuden ihanan huoneen vanhasta talosta, jonka olet luullut tuntevasi ja menet sisään huoneeseen ja kaikki on ihanaa ja ihmettelet vain, kuinka et ole sitä tiennyt. --joka saa ihailla auringonnousua tietäen, että näin tapahtuu vain miehen vuoksi. Ensimmäistä kertaa hän [Tove] tunsi itse olevansa aurinko, vaikka se alkaisikin todella loistaa vasta keväällä Vivican palatessa Suomeen.
i wish all children’s comics had origin stories this slutty

Tove Jansson has been my queer icon and one of the greatest influences as an artist and as a role model for me ever since I was like six years old. This was beautiful depiction of her and her relationship with her art and about the way she loved. It’s also a very springtime-y film and made me appreciate all the special queer connections I have in my life.
Watched this one last time through the Cleveland Film Festival. Took a nap. Woke up and almost immediately started crying because it's not available for me to watch anywhere.
I'll be listening to this soundtrack on repeat until I can own a copy of the movie.
Struggling with how I feel about this. It did include a lot of conventional biopic stuff, but those aspects were almost backgrounded. It's of course all about her romance/obsession with Vivian, which I felt was explored pretty well. It's also a little sad if this acurately conveys that she saw the Moomins as just a way to support herself and never really considered them true art. 2021 SIFF #8
