tully is infectiously sweet, dreamy, otherworldly. watching this with my mom made it all the better, crying into each others arms watching a world we both knew and dreamt of. life and motherhood are intertwined with love and dreams. tully is magic.

A very different kind of adult fairy tale (one that frequently doubles as a feature-length advertisement for tubal ligation), “Tully” is a fantasy of the highest order; it might look like an episode of “This Is Us,” but this story is every bit as magical as “The Shape of Water.” Think of it as Diablo Cody’s modern take on “Mary Poppins”: What it lacks in songs, it more than makes up for in sex scenes and Carly Rae Jepsen sing-alongs. Funnier than “Juno” and almost as ruthlessly honest as “Young Adult,” Cody’s third collaboration with director Jason Reitman is a razor-sharp movie about the trials of motherhood, and the clear and present danger of losing yourself once you start living for someone else.

Charlize Theron singing Call Me Maybe saved cinema I cannot make this up

if you're a woman willing to push herself to extremes to ensure the wellbeing of your children i love you, i'm proud of you and i'm constantly in awe of your power because i know i could never do half the things you do every day

I sat in silence in my car for a good 15 minutes after this just letting it soak in

i will not rest until Jason Reitman & Diablo Cody edit Juno, Young Adult and Tully so that Juno leads into the other two movies intercut together, like some sort of fucked up, Frankenstein'd, 5-hour-long Sliding Doors

this made me simultaneously want to hold a baby and to be held by mackenzie davis

oh my GOD???? oh my god. its SO GOOD???? this movie has everything. charlize singing CALL ME MAYBE, A DIRECT SHOUTOUT to one off the best child hood book series' KATIE KAZOO, SWITCHEROO, AN ELMO'S WORLD CAMEO, AND MOMS BEING THE BEST. AND ONCE AGAIN I AM CRYING!!!!!!!

I can't really say why I liked Tully as much as I did, because they're things that pretty much need to be part of the viewing experience. It does a few things that are definitely tropey, but it does those things in a way that really only enhances the things it's been trying to say before those tropes become a factor.

That's legitimately all I can really say about it as a movie, other than the fact that Charlize Theron is an incredible actor and if we can somehow find a way to distill her talent and pollinate drama schools with it, we should be investing in that program post-haste.

Also, as much as Ivan Reitman has given the world of filmmaking and film lovers alike, Jason Reitman is definitely his biggest gift. Very well written by Diablo Cody as well, making this my #1 Theron/Reitman/Cody film over Young Adult. And I loved Young Adult.

Early motherhood and post-partum depression are a whole lot like this. Diablo Cody, who wrote the screenplay, clearly knows the topic and is able to pierce the dark side of it really well. The ending is simply brilliant. The audience can see it coming (if you pay attention to details), but you prefer to play along because you want Marlo to get well, which in the end hopefully happens.

Et tout comme dans Young Adult, Charlize Theron interprète les savoureux dialogues de Diablo Cody avec une grande justesse. Un trio gagnant que j'espère revoir bientôt.
