The rare show in this genre that cares about the victims more than it cares about the perpetrators. There is a distinctly different perspective behind the material that plays out in every single interaction and conversation. It’s angry about injustices, especially within law enforcement and the justice system, but it’s also deeply compassionate towards the people who are thrown into that system. It’s the little things that really add up here - it takes care to show moments of comfort, of validation, of even just one person telling the other what resources she has to offer. It lingers, but in a respectful way. One of the better shows of the year, strong recommend.

“No judgment. I get it.”
I was turned on to the mini-series after Paul Schrader raved about it in a public Facebook post and thanked the friends that recommended it to him. So it continues to spread by word of mouth. I was also engrossed in it and split it up half and half over the course of two days.
Eight one-hour episodes fly by, as we follow Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever) who makes a claim that she was raped by a man mysteriously in the middle of the night.
Merritt Wever and Danielle Macdonald give best of career performances, and Toni Collette is not too shabby either.
In addition, female directors were given an opportunity: Lisa Cholodenko (episodes 1-3) and Susannah Grant (episodes 7-8)

I knew this was going to be a heartbreaking miniseries the moment I finished the first episode. It's just outstanding from beginning to end. Unbelievable shows that there is strenght in vulnerability and that empathy goes a long way.
“You know, no one ever accuses a robbery victim of lying or someone who was carjacked. Doesn’t happen. But when it comes to sexual assault...”
*Powerful* stuff. Kaitlyn Dever (who gives not only her best performance since Short Term 12, but the best performance of her career), Merritt Wever and Toni Collette are all exceptional and should be nominated for Emmys. If you haven’t already, it is essential that you watch Unbelievable on Netflix ASAP.
i want my own personal detective toni collette doll that tell me phrases “bitch you are on your GAME!” and “maybe i’ll get a tattoo of an ass on my ass. that’s kinda meta.” by pulling on her high pony tail, kind of like how woody says “reach for the sky” whenever someone pulls on his string in toy story 2
oh also, this show is fucking great. it’s binge-worthy while having a really important story that needed to be said.
if you have netflix and you haven’t yet watched this, please, i urge you to. this is some fantastic television. stories like these probably happen all too often yet we hardly ever hear about them. so i want to thank marie and the other victims for being brave, and the cast and crew because everyone does such a brilliant job here.
Can we please stop making Kaitlyn Dever cry? Please? Like, I can't weep anymore, guys. PLEASE STOP!!!
i hope this series wins all of the awards it deserves next year, starting with kaitlyn dever—she's a fantastic actress but besides short term 12, this is my favourite performance of hers by far. she put everything into her portrayal of this real life person and i could feel her emotion through and through. toni collette and merritt weaver also have some of the best on-screen cop chemistry i've seen in years as well, i loved the pairing of those two very much!
a heartbreaking true story mixed with an incredible cast, script, and cinematography, unbelievable is one of the best series that 2019 has brought us so far!
i know i’m late to the party with this one, but all i can say is wow. should be essential viewing for everyone. marie’s story was so heartbreaking and it scares me to think of others who have been in her position because a lazy cop didn’t want to do their job. the way that the two central storylines were interwoven was really effective and it was overall just so well done. i hope kaitlyn dever, merritt wever, and toni collette get all the awards for this one because they deserve it!!!!!!!!
Terrific performance from the lead actresses.
Merritt Wever surprise me the most.
Toni is definitely one of the greatest of our times. Deserve more love.
Episode 1:
Love to see my city (or at least a neighboring city) accurately portrayed as the frozen circle of bureaucratic hell underneath a veil of friendliness that it is. These cops, foster parents, all these authority figures are quintessential Seattleites: couching everything with "it's totally understandable why you'd do this", "we know you're not a bad person", "I'm sorry things are so hard for you" while they slowly, thoughtlessly push the knife in deeper. One gets the sense that they really believe in these platitudes and niceties - or that they at least believe that they believe in them. As tangled as Marie's psychology becomes in the wake of her traumatic assault and the ensuing gaslighting, she can't hold…
Aflevering 1 gezien en niet overtuigd.
Ik wacht op Toni Collette dat iedereen gaat omverblazen met haar performance (hopelijk).
De rest van de afleveringen gezien. Toni Collette speelde inderdaad kei goed. Daarom de extra halve ster.
If the truth is inconvenient. If it doesn't fit, then they don't believe it.
Marie's story is absolutely heartbreaking. I really love the depiction of how complex mental health can be in the light of trauma.
Something I thought was really interesting was Merritt Wever's voice for this character. It stayed so gentle and caring the whole time. I wouldn't be surprised if I have my actors utilize that in my own projects, I really love how much it adds to the character.
This takes a couple episodes to get going (well, until Toni Collette shows up like halfway thru) but when it gets going, it’s GOING.
