this wasn’t even that scary I’m just convinced white people are afraid of anything that isn’t in English
I see plenty of reviews of this movie, bashing its scariness. Funnily enough considering the type of movie it is, it's not awash with lame jump scares that are apparently the measurement for scares these days. Also the scariness of a horror film is not a valid criticism, the genre is not called a scary film. The role of the genre is to horrify in multiple different ways, and if it scares you well that's great because they can do that as well. The Thing doesn't scare me but it's a great horror film! I don't know where the fuck that mentality came from, but I blame it on Paranormal Activity.
This movie did scare me though, several sequences had…
IF YOU'RE A WHITE PERSON STOP FUCKING WITH OUIJA BOARDS RIGHT THIS INSTANT. LEARN FROM YOUR PEOPLE'S HISTORY.
"get ready to clench your ass cheeks for almost 2 straight hours, idiot"
-Paco Plaza to me as he launches my dumb stupid ass headfirst into one of the most visually striking, expertly edited, and well acted horror movies in years.
Executive A: How can we make the ghost scarier?
Executive B: What if it was her dead father.
Executive A: Scary but not scary enough.
Executive B: What if he was naked?
Veronica is a very standard horror film that is mainly effective in its scares through the use of the score. The main actress is very good and it works. The epilogue is interesting. No complaints.
Vegan alert:
Milk spilled all over the floor.
Horror movies involving Ouija boards are so common in the genre that there's even a site to catalog all the productions (movies and tv) of this odd subgenre.
Unfortunately, in most cases, these films are super cheap and made just to appeal to an undemanding teen audience. But there are exceptions such as 2016's "Ouija: Origin of Evil".
In the first act, "Veronica" seemed to be another exception to the rule with good characters, great performances including natural and charismatic child actors, a beautiful production and a solid direction by Paco Plaza (REC movies). But as the plot unfolds, I kept waiting for an original moment, a twist or, at least, scenes that kept the tension going for more than…
Being dubbed “the scariest horror film ever” by Netflix audience is the worst thing that could have happened to this Spanish chiller. Sure the hype generated by the easily scared people garnered this foreign language film a broader viewership but it also invited higher expectations which Verónica is unfortunately unable to fulfil.
The story of Verónica follows a teenage girl who decides to conduct a séance with her friends through an Ouija board during a total solar eclipse which goes horribly wrong. Sensing a strange presence around her ever since, she begins to lose her grasp on reality and desperately tries to protect her family after learning more about the evil she inadvertently unleashed.

I think the idea that it's based on true events is practically the only thing that makes it scary.
Gotta love the nun scenes tho.
I'm not the only one to say this, but: What are articles talking about calling this the scariest movie ever? There was one scene where it felt slightly tense for me but the rest was pretty boring. It was still an interesting story to watch and I was surprised to find out it was based on a true story. It was a good movie, and nice to see a spanish film become mainstream. But still I watched it to be scared and in that department I was underwhelmed.
La historia es muy cliché pero vaya que las actuaciones son buenas, se esfuerzan y está bien hecha.
The first time I watched it I was so scared I had to turn it off and finish it later (it was dark and I was in an unfamiliar place). It’s really well made, the directing is great, and the movie had a good plot. All the actors are good, even the children.
Director Paco Plaza’s Verónica is a supernatural horror film inspired by the true story of Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro. The film is a well-executed take on a familiar story of possession. The story builds slowly, sometimes too slowly, but becomes amazing during the final third. I liked the ending quite a bit, and the incorporation of pictures from the actual crime scene was a nice touch that sent the creepiness factor through the roof. There were quite a few good scares in the film, nothing felt forced or cheap.
The film has a cool style, mostly thanks to the amazing soundtrack, consisting of great Spanish rock from Heroes Del Silencio and some eerie synth-heavy instrumental tracks. There were quite a few…
