It's bad guys are really bad.
It's hot chicks are really hot.
And it's violence is really violent.
It's not very clever, but The Rock has been making average films good since 1999.
It says it right there on the poster. 'The Rock.' None of that excess information like Dwayne Johnson. Fuck that shit. This is The Rock as he was meant to be. A motherfucking one-man-army.
He doesn't need any big name co-stars. Fuck no. Johnny Knoxville's all he needs as the skinny smart-ass friend. This is The Rock's show and there is no doubt about it from the get go.
The Rock arrives back in his hometown after years in the military and almost immediately he sees drug deals going on and hears the junkies begging for their next hit. It's all so obvious to The Rock, because The Rock is the most observant motherfucker around. He's got eagle eyes. Eyes…
This was one of The Rock's earlier acting roles but you could already tell he's a superstar in the making. Here he stars as Chris Vaughn who after leaving the special forces moves back to his hometown after 8 years away but a lot has changed in those 8 years. The Mill, which was once a thriving source of employment has closed down and the town is now under control of Jay Hamilton (Neal McDonough), a casino owner with the sheriff in his back pocket, Jay's also pedaling drugs and girls, ripping the town apart from the inside out, if its illegal you can guarantee Jay will be getting a slice of the pie. After getting into a fight with…
When you’re The Rock I guess two wrongs do make a right.
Walking Tall is a remake that is enjoyable enough on the surface. The Rock deserves a lot of credit for how fun it is and it’s surprisingly well directed at times. Although once you think about it’s easy to notice how ridiculous this story is.
The Rock’s sheriff character is basically the lesser of two evils in his town. He settles for the old fashioned form of justice. His worst offence is hiring Johnny Knoxville as his deputy. In all seriousness though The Rock and Knoxville make a surprisingly fun pair.
A very lean runtime and some fun action make this a dumb, but mostly enjoyable time.
This is so early 2000s that it felt like a glass full of nostalgia. Just like the movies I saw on the weekends when I was a child.
I'm not sure why someone would remake a movie based on a true story and stay faithful to neither.
But I love The Rock and Johnny Knoxville so much, I can't even be that mad.
With a solid, no frills, set up, this engaging little actioner goes downhill quick once The Rock is elected Sheriff, saved only by Ashley Scott's perky nip nips and that chap from desperate housewife’s delusional axe attack against our enormous hero. What was he thinking?
What was he drinking more like.
This felt like barely a movie but like still entertaining enough to sit through. The Rock as a movie star fascinates me. He's good but not like good good. You know?
How wonderfully short!
My only nitpick would be the writing. People on both sides of our moral equation do many things that are plainly not smart, unnecessarily endangering their interests and loved ones. And I'm left with questions as to how this particular resolution would instantly repair years of economic neglect and damage to the town.
But Dwayne Johnson pummels villains with a huge chunk of lumber, which was the whole point of this, so there's not really much for me to complain about.
Action movies I suggested before my wife settled on this:
Snowpiercer
The Dark Knight Rises
Kill Bill (Either one)
Equilibrium
The Dark Knight
sigh.
There is a good movie somewhere in here that leans into its western traits more and is less basic in its values. But this movie is not good.
You know, its nice just seeing a movie where the rock takes some guys out. Its badass and fun. I just wish this wasn't legit 1:14. Its legit that short I feel there could've been a good 16 minutes add3ed to fill in that length to make it at least 90 minutes but it was a fun watch for what its worth
Entertaining in both intentional/unintentional ways; the action hits hard (even with the PG13 rating) and the short runtime makes it an easy watch. The drama however is dull bordering on laughable (the courtroom trial is absolutely ridiculous).
Johnny Knoxville definitely walked onto set wearing that t-shirt with "MISFITS" written in magic marker on the front, and they were just like "okay yep, no need for wardrobe changes, let's roll!"
Such a weirdly paced movie. The rock becomes sheriff in like, a 5 second span with zero explanation. But it was cool as hell to see him beat some dudes down with a plank of wood.

I wish The Rock would make movies like this again, even though it's pretty stupid. But I guess he's just too big of a star now.
This movie is wildly efficient and uses a lot of good time getting the characters to hang out and learn about them.
Nowhere near as good as the original but it is alot of fun. Straight to the point and bonkers fun. One of the films that helped Dwayne become a bonafide action stud lol

Entertaining actionner with a young The Rock being a compelling protagonist and hero in a good old fashioned good versus evil in a small town tale.
