50. Movement - Berlin School (1990s-current) (2020 List)
Grisebach's thoughtful drama follows Meinhard, a German construction worker employed on a dam project in rural Bulgaria. While the rest of the machismo crew engage in infantile antics and drinking, Meinhard increasingly finds his way mingling with the locals in spite of the language barrier.
This is an overly patient film. It reveals details slowly and employs every minute of its time to stretch out its narrative structure. I'm not sure where Valeska Grisebach found Meinhard Neumann, but what a find! He is excellent as the taciturn outsider who tries to make more of his experience besides drinking, antagonizing the locals and exacerbating a water supply problem.
