File this under kids movies that probably would have received the ‘PG-13’ rating (or ‘R’) had they come out later on - right next to Jaws, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Poltergeist and The Graduate. This is really one of the most adult “PG” rated films out of the bunch though. Murder, adult humor, violence and sexual innuendos are abundant throughout the entire film and it’s fantastic.
The visuals are still so impressive, the cartoon / live-action blend is probably one of the best on film. The film plays up a vintage 40s vibe to compliment the noir nursery mystery and they really do a great job nailing the aesthetic.
Bob Hoskins plays Eddie Valiant - an alcoholic detective - and he’s perfect in the role. Bringing a crotchety charm to the down-on-his-luck type of role.
Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom is one of the most terrifying villains ever.
Pure nightmare fuel.
