Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is here, and it's a disaster. However, the movie boasts a promising cast. Margot Robbie was great as Harley Quinn and Will Smith turns in a charismatic performance as Deadshot. The supporting cast ends up wasting talented actors though like Viola Davis and Jai Courtney in his first decent performance ever.

But Oscar winner Jared Leto delivers an extremely over the top performance as the Joker. He tries to outdo Ledger, but only ends up overdoing it. The way the iconic character is intergrated into the story is nothing more than a glorified cameo, and is downright insulting.

Sometimes the soundtrack works, other times it's extremely out of place. Some of the action sequences are fun, some are just lame. Yet another superhero movie ends with a giant laser being shot into the sky to destroy the world! How original!

The color palette was a poor choice, for this movie is nowhere near as colorful as the posters suggest. Instead, a darker filter is applied to the film, making it extremely visually unappealing.

The worst part of this movie is how bad the editing is. The focus jumps all over the place, we go from character to character in a random order, sometimes interjecting a flashback into the mix. It's some of the worst editing I've ever seen. The story is also very boring, it goes no where.

There is no excuse for how bad the script is. The villain is so uninteresting and over the top, with unexplained motivations. And almost all of the humor falls completely flat, with cringeworthy jokes and terrible dialogue.

One of my most anticipated movies of the year is a crushing disappointment. The directing, editing, and storytelling is just awful, and the cast is really the only thing that saves this movie. Nothing makes any sense here, and it's a very frustrating movie to sit through. I REALLY wanted to like this movie, but the DCU has yet again let me down, and seems to be spiraling out of control.
