One of the greatest sequels of all time, Terminator 2 is an amazing achievement in science-fiction action filmmaking.
James Cameron steps it up in nearly every aspect, building upon his already great first film to make a truly flawlessly crafted thriller. It's bigger and better than the 1984 original, but also more human.
To flesh out the characters, Cameron assembled a reliable cast in the returning Arnold Schwarzenegger in his most iconic role, the meaner and tougher Linda Hamilton, the frightening antagonist of Robert Patrick, and a breakout performance from young Edward Furlong. Character development is much stronger than your normal action picture, as the seemingly non stop thrill ride has its quiteter scenes. Any film that can make me become invested in the relationship between a young boy and an android has done something right.
The visual effects are much improved as well, for almost every effect holds up to this day. The shocking transformations of the T-1000 still dazzle, and the practical effects incorporated throughout are some of the finest ever created. These help craft some of the best action sequences ever put to film. The musical score is also better, as it sets the tone of the movie perfectly.
Pacing in this 137 adventure is pitch perfect, consistently holding your attention. This is due to stellar editing, as each scene is as important as the last. Thematically this is a much deeper movie, raising questions about changing our fate, and the lengths we'll go to protect the ones we love.
With a strong script, great performances, an engaging story, thrilling action scenes, and assured direction, Terminator 2 stands the test of time and never gets old.
