Ladies and gentlemen, it's a banger. The kind of colossal cult film that begs to be seen at midnight in a pitch-black room, reminiscent of the generation defining ultraviolent 80s VHS sci-fi. Possessor however is a viviaciously contemporary reflection on our Internet of Things, critically what happens when the corporeal self is entangled in the same realm as smartphones, webcams and virtual reality. Cronenberg explores a riveting bio/technosphere where bodies aren't just exploited for jobs, but the bodies are the jobs. More intelligent and cutting than its splashy violence might let on. Crammed with great performances, prosthetic work and mind-bending imagery, whilst it's not always perfect, Possessor is immensely entertaining and the kind of film I'd dream to make.
