Sound of Metal ★★★★

Really would’ve shot into full masterpiece-status if Cianfrance had stuck around to direct, but what Darius Marder manages to accomplish here is still pretty insane, especially for a debut. Every person’s backstory is written right on their face and the world as a whole feels remarkably lived-in for something that’s barely two hours. Developing characters by showing rather than telling, in a way not unlike what he did with the Pines script. And similar to what everyone else has said by now, Riz Ahmed completely kills it. Calling his work in this career best doesn’t cut it in the slightest
