    Lady Snowblood

    ★★★★½

''Look at me closely. Do I look like someone you raped?''

    Lady Snowblood is a classic.
It's one of the most influential Japanese films of the 70s.
Wonderfully pulpy, beautiful, and brilliantly violent.

THIS REVIEW IS A WARNING AGAINST THE BOTCHED CRITERION REMASTER OF THE FILM

The Arrow Blu-Ray release reproduces, accurately, the original version of the film. Yes, the film is slightly washed out—this is congruent with other similar films of the era and the film's own sequel—and the…

    The Blood of a Poet

    ★★★★★

''is it not crazy to wake up statues so suddenly from their secular sleep?''

The black angel with a limp.
    Living Statues.
    Mirrors.
    Lips.
    Suicide.
    Hotel Rooms.
The dead body and the cheater.

    Pure aesthetics.
    Playful entertainment.

A half-sleeping odyssey through a field of imagery that's self-consciously devoid of deep meaning; the subconscious deliberately suppressed.

''I don't know how it should end.''

Really visually interesting, edging around (but never getting bogged down in) some really interesting themes and narrative choices.

It doesn't all work, but when it works it really works.

The baby and the dog were great!

    Oswald Spengler would be proud.

    The Neighbors' Window

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

''You're not the only one who misses being twenty.''

All it takes to rekindle your dying relationship is watching your sexy, infertile neighbour die painfully from terminal cancer.

I guess some people do have it harder than an upper middle-class New York stay at home mum with three lovely kids and a loving husband who's always around and has a lucrative career as a record producer. Who knew?

Also, who the hell misses being twenty?!

    ''r u wet?''

    Noisy nonsense.

Just a complete mess, and not a fun one.

Adam Sandler is good, but there's very little else going on here.

The incessant chatter is mind numbing—it's not a 'soundscape' it's the Safdie brothers being so paranoid that their film can't stand on its own merits that they think they need constant pulsing electronica and non-stop talking (frequently both overlapping one another) to keep people engaged.
Maybe some people see it as an effective way…
