Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★

I finally got around to seeing this thing, and made the effort to see it in Tarantino's theater.

I'm not going to say a lot, but I will say my first impulse when the credits rolled was to say this was his finest movie since Jackie Brown.

The movie did have it's share of tongue-in-cheek racism against Latin people, but I was shocked when I realized there was not a single "n word" in the 3 hour running time. I realized a few minutes later that there were no black people in the movie, though... to the best of my recollection.

Some people told me that nothing happens in the movie, that it's just people hanging out. That did not deter me at all, and after watching it, I must say that is not at all what I think the movie is. There are of course some scenes in which people are just in one place, talking about their current events. But so much else happens! Cool it, naysayers.

DiCaprio and Pitt have a great chemistry together, the kind of buddy dynamic that might suck your dick after enough drinks, a kind that was prevalent on screen among male leads back in the 60's. I enjoyed seeing that extend to the off-camera portions of the movie, ignoring of course that it was all on-camera.

Feet. Yes. Even Leo's feet! Whatever, dude, get yours. Just make movies this good and I don't care. But I gotta say, some girl I went on a road trip with back in college took off her shoes and put her feet up on the dash in my Malibu... put her bare feet right up against the windshield like Margaret Qualley does in this movie. And the foot print NEVER CAME OFF. I cringed when it happened to DiCaprio's poor Cadillac. That was the one bright side to my Malibu getting totaled.
