    hooptober 4.0 - film #03

    a masterclass in brutal, efficient filmmaking. the script is airtight, quickly setting up a scorching critique of capitalism and a wonderfully grotesque vision of a hollow, abandoned desert before launching into what is essentially the popular genesis of the slasher genre. that marvelous final shot of leatherface swinging his chainsaw around in the sweltering texas sun is one that sticks with you forever.

    beautiful and torturous; a neo-noir shot in bright colour and sweeping wide shots yet every bit as claustrophobic as the genre's classics. lee leaves you grasping and yearning for anything outside of frame but never yields, keeping you in the muck and messiness of these character's lives.

    yet, as i write this the day after seeing it, i still can't shake the potential yuckiness of the gender politics in this one, nor can i figure out where i land on…

    i had hoped this would be mindless dumb fun but unfortunately it is completely boring, cynical, and uninspired in every way.
