How long does it take to milk a cow? Just like a perfectly warm oily cake, I thoroughly enjoyed the slow world building, scenes enveloped in softness, the organic friendship made between the two main characters - Otiz and King Lu, and the ridiculously simple plot that managed to thicken and become more tender during the final scenes. Wonderful treat as it is my first time watching a Kelly Richardt film.
In the beginning I was awry and lost, but not for long, First Cow compounds in intensity as the story moves on, so rich in details yet never overbearing.
There is something rotten to the bones, seeping through Sonya and her household - of body, spirit, of will to live. The nonchalant display of familiarity with death and decay left me squirming - so is the emptiness, the muted colors, the quietude. This is Pokwang in her best, career defining role. Truly an ode to nothingness - a destination so bleak and deprived, of life so meaningless and hopeless that even in the end it felt like the protagonist has driven herself to her own funeral, to her own demise.
