How long does it take to milk a cow? Just like a perfectly warm oily cake, I thoroughly enjoyed the slow world building, scenes enveloped in softness, the organic friendship made between the two main characters - Otiz and King Lu, and the ridiculously simple plot that managed to thicken and become more tender during the final scenes. Wonderful treat as it is my first time watching a Kelly Richardt film.

In the beginning I was awry and lost, but not for long, First Cow compounds in intensity as the story moves on, so rich in details yet never overbearing.

    Ode to Nothing

    ★★★★

There is something rotten to the bones, seeping through Sonya and her household - of body, spirit, of will to live. The nonchalant display of familiarity with death and decay left me squirming - so is the emptiness, the muted colors, the quietude. This is Pokwang in her best, career defining role. Truly an ode to nothingness - a destination so bleak and deprived, of life so meaningless and hopeless that even in the end it felt like the protagonist has driven herself to her own funeral, to her own demise.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have imagined this movie to turn out. I have read the book beginning of this year, the buzz was already starting, Luca Guadagnino is working on an adaptation starring Chalamet and Hammer. I have dreamt of lazy Italian afternoons and tennis, of Monet's berm, of soaking in the sun in between reading and piano clips. How would Timothée give justice to the difficult and multi-layered persona that is Elio…

    The Square

    ★★★★

Every scene in The Square feels like a performance art. Pickpockets luring their victims into an almost theatrical acting scam. Snatched phone incident getting more and more haywire. The most anxious Tourette’s Syndrome episode ever. Discovering the strange girl you're about to sleep with has a pet chimpanzee. Post-coital fighting over who gets to throw a used condom. Post-post-coital argument about commitment, next to a high stack of display chairs that are about to fall. A beggar asking for food…
